While that dude just wouldn't back down from his idiocy. I think he just misinterpreted the question, he was alluding to something more a kin to:

"What is the probability that someone is going to share a birthday with person X out Y people"
That's why he used the roulette wheel analogy. He thought it was the probablility of a particular match, not of a match occurring within the population.

Probably so. He was thinking of it as something like "How many people do you need so that two have a birthday on January 13", which is a different problem entirely.

there are more drastic illustrations of reaching absolute certainty but this one is pretty good and easy to understand.

The only thing I can think of that could be tripping people up is confusing date of birth with birthday. Still, if you took 1 million people at random you would need people spanning 2,732 years (1M/366) to have zero matches. Given current human lifespans, this is as close to impossible as you will get.

So no two people out of a million share a birthday??? Is that what you're saying?

Is it possible. Yes it is possible.

I would agree that practically speaking, it is impossible, but statistically speaking there is a chance.

What are the odds that no one shares a birthday out of 10 people? out of 100? out of 1,000 or 100,000?

Each of those numbers have a statistical probability that no one will share a birthday. You tell me when that probability hits zero. What is the number?

If you take 70 people at random there is a 99.9% chance two of them will have the same birthday but that # doesn't reach 100% unless you have 367.

What happens if they are in a vehicle going 100MPH vs one only going 50MPH?

I think it's pretty funny when people react with surprise that another person shares their birthay. seriously it's not very unlikely

Meh, In my entire life, I have only met two people with my birthday, so it kind of is unlikely

Where the hell do you people come from?

Yeah, there is a number. It is 367. Please, explain how you could have 367 people in a room and have not a single shared birthday (day and month)

In fact, assuming there is no one older than 120 on this planet, you could get ~44k people together and say with certainty that there is AT LEAST one pair that shares the same day, month, and year.

This is simple fricking math.

My trig teacher in high school did this in class. We got to the very last person (about 34 people), and had a match!

Great teacher
