I'm not an engineer. But I've been working in the engineering field for almost 20 years. Commercial and industrial. There's a reason the plants call us to to have our P.E. run calcs for suggestions that their on staff engineer, who isn't a P.E. comes up with. Because their on staff engineer isn't qualified to do so. Same reason our employees with engineering degrees have their work checked by our P.E.s.

and yet when you send in your calcs and drawings to someone at the plant like me, i have to go through it and fix all the mistakes because the guys at the firm were too fricking lazy to get out of their chair and actually come walk the job instead of just looking at the scan. also too lazy to grab the operator to walk the job with them and explain how he uses the equipment every day

also the non licensed staff guys like me catch issues on calcs all the time

and ftr that is not why plants use firms. Most of the insurance companies and certain certifications require 3rd party stamped drawings and calcs not to mention a plant isnt going to spend a million a year in software license to have it used 4-5 times a year by employees who are not efficient at using it because they never do it. That would be stupid and the staff guy has way better things to do and makes a lot more than the firm guy.

yeah y'all gotta name every document a series of numbers and letters that make no sense then have a document register listing them with more reference numbers then a damn index so you're having to jump through hoops to figure out what 3 of the 3,757 specs included with the 2 ISOs are relevant

To be fair, 90% of the time that is client driven and we don’t have a choice on how we structure/number the drawings in a work package.

I’m an EE and agree a lot of engineers make shite way more complicated than it should be, and design stuff off theory instead of real world. But not all of us are like that.

I worked for an electrical contractor in refineries/chem plants over the summer while getting my degree. I honestly think that gave me more knowledge for what I do every day than college did. Should be mandatory to spend time in the field before getting a degree.

engineers serve a purpose, to absorb liability. unless the drawings say otherwise

We walk down every single project with operations, the client PM, and safety prior to even getting our scan crews out there. And its highly unlikely yall make more than our P.Es do.

umm senior engineers make more in salary and the benefits are 10x better, retirement alone makes working at a firm not worth it. I've worked all over....an engineer for a firm is a much worse job in most cases. Now in a place like Houston, maybe even Dallas that might not be the case but in LA it is. I Could get my PE at anytime but I'm not paying for the class and work sees no use in it so they aren't going to pay, I wouldn't even get a pay bump for getting it. Its essentially useless for most that work in the plant.

and yea yall walk it one time and never go back. Trust me...i have done over 100 projects with firms, nothing annoys me more than the engineer that doesn't come out. and ftr not every engineer even does what you said. many just send the scan crew out and that's it. I had a former LA Tech Professor that worked for a firm doing a project for me as the civil on the project....dude couldn't even get in the plant because he didn't have a twic card. not to mention many times firms are 3+ hours away

Always start with the potential consequences you’re trying to prevent, then decide how crazy you need to get.

Being skilled at consequence analyses is a big part of being a decent engineer.

No offense but the reason most people hate engineers and youth baseball are because of dudes like you

You’ve dropped too many breadcrumbs

Once again, no offense intended

There are tons of engineers out there that I call "Engineers in Degree Only" that aren't actually engineers

I graduated and worked in engineering (PETE 2011)

Why would I hate them

Definitely agree with your second point though

It’s nice of you to admit it

shite i work as one and i hate them half the time.

its love hate, half I love and think they are amazing, half get on my nerves cause their fricking lazy

but i guess thats anything. i had the same feelings in project management and pretty much every job i have ever worked.

and of course i like pissing off people on youth baseball, why you think i posted the thing about the automatic ball strike AI thing 2D is implementing in their tournaments.....it pisses off the old heads big time

A physicist, mathematician and engineer were asked to determine the volume of a red rubber ball.

The physicist filled a beaker with water, immersed the ball, caught the runoff and measured its volume.

The mathematician set up and solved an appropriate triple integral, then measured the diameter of the ball and plugged in the number.

The engineer looked around on his bookshelf, then asked,

"Has anyone got a red rubber ball volume table? I've only got the ones for blue and purple."
