This is the solution. DOTD, by law, builds what the legislature directs them to by bills.

Getting mad at DOTD for not building stuff is akin to getting pissed at your bass boat for not going out and catching fish.

Yeah but their lack of maintenance is a big problem. They have over 4,000 employees. What the hell are they all doing?

Do we have to phone Congress to fix missing reflectors or run a street sweeper too?

They scraped off all the reflectors when it snowed, you would think they would have replaced them by now

Let’s keep voting for pro-18-wheeler legislators who think that destroying your ability to make claims against insurance companies will actually reduce insurance rates. Didn’t work in 2020 or 2024 and won’t work this time either.

Remember, your legislators promised you lowered premiums. When it’s confirmed that they lied to you, will you vote them in again?

Ah, yes, the Louisiana culture of "everything should be a lawsuit".

They broke off many with the plows. But they were also missing most of them before that.

It has been in need of a major investment for 20 years, but they stopped widening in Livingston Parish for some reason.

They widened most of the bridges between Satsuma and I-55 years ago in preparation for future widening. It wouldn’t be hard to do with the bridges already done. They just have to do it.

The big rigs are a real issue. Maybe only 30% of the vehicles but they take up 70% of the road capacity. And every accident that involves them blocks both lanes.

The biggest problem is the lack of maintenance and the unsafe road conditions due to years of neglect. That’s on LADOTD and our friends at that never replaces street light bulbs.

Well,I 'm sure they are sometimes at fault, but to me it's more like all these idiots trying to fly around them, tailgating too close, cutting people off and cutting the 18 wheelers off.

I'm sure the Nissan played a part in it. They always do. It's probably not even its third bout of body damage.
My thought too.

And even if it was innocent in that specific incident, it had been guilty in earlier instances and got away with it.

Karma was witnessed by the OP.

Majority of the time its a car doing something reckless that forces the 18 wheeler to do something stupid

That being said self driving 18 wheelers with AI coordinating distances between them, keeping them all at 1 mph below speed limit and out of left lane as much as possible would reduce congestion and prevent a lot of accidents

Either that or the 18 wheeler driver does something stupid on their own. They aren't quite as bad as a typical Nissan Altima, lifted Ford pickup, or BMW driver but they are definitely worse than the average old fart in a Tundra or Suburban.

The quality of big rig driver has collapsed in the last 20 years. It's okay to admit that they screw up way more often than they used to.

I say, we just make all 18 wheelers illegal on the interstates. Hell, just make them illegal all together. I can survive without them. Can YOU?

They probably do

But there is also a lot more of them because we consume a lot more bullshite than we did 20-30 years ago

Improving our highway network with added lanes, lighting, and more alternative routes would go a long way towards reducing the number of insurance claims.

Just getting the debris off the road and painting stripes occasionally would be a big help.

Apparently yes. Filling pot holes requires a favor to be called in.

We spend the funds we’re given to play catch up, honestly.
To do maintenance or preservation work, you should do it when the pavement is still in relatively fair to good condition.

Doing maintenance to pavement in poor condition or once the base has already failed is like putting a band aid on a stab wound.
It would take a departmental wide shift in philosophy to kill the worst first strategy.

We’re caught in a cycle where by the time we spent all this money completely ripping out the base and rebuilding a road, a new one is already in poor condition, and calls for the same treatment… instead of trying to do thin overlays and preventative maintenance actions while the pavement is still in good condition. Also many states have a higher budget than we do for these maintenance type projects.

ETA: this still is a surface issue and doesn’t fix the capacity issue, which it sounds like I-12 is.
Those types of interstate widening projects have to go through so many channels of environmental, real estate, etc and often have split funding of all types. Fed, state, grants, etc that have to be reviewed by all entities involved.
