The Gulf of Mexico this week is the hottest it's been at any point in any year on record by a wide margin. Weekly averaged Gulf sea surface temperatures have never broken 87°F but this week topped 88°F, an astonishing 1.4°C (2.6°F) above the 1991-2020 average.

Takes a crazy amount of heat to heat up the a body of water that large by over a degree. That is crazy!

surface temps in fhe MS Sound dropped five degrees below what they had been because of clouds and little rain the area received yesterday. Surface temperatures are for clicks and ratings. It’s always hot enough to produce a big storm - but there are other important factors that don’t drive ratings at the travel ball Facebook mom’s house

It's as if some people think high sea surface temps are the main driver in predicting an above average season.

Last season and this season are going to tell a story about tropical forecasting. All that was missing last season were SSTs. This season, the best ingredient going by a long shot is SSTs. The theory is that those warm SSTs will overcome the sub-par background state that should prevail most of this season. This first period of increased activity will tell a lot.

Anyone who had the real Death Valley getting more August rain than the BR Death Valley on their 2023 Weather Pool(tm) wins a TD coozie.

18z GFS says "frick errybody and yo drought!" and gives all the rain to ol' Mehico.

It also kills the lead wave in the Atlantic. It ain't in true happy hour form right now.

I tried not to look it in the eye. Don't want it to see me.

It's it just me, or does the wind seem to be blowing pretty constant now. Close your eyes and it feels like you're in Arizona.

A fast moving tropical storm/depression wouldn't be the worst thing that could happen right now. The Euro is still a believer and brings anywhere from 2.5-10" of rain from the coast into a swath of Texas.
