Hurricane Season

Does anyone have any insight on how to predict if hurricane season will be bad?
I know it has been one of the hotter summers in a while. I know it's too early to care or want to worry about this, but who has some logical opinions on what will come our way this year?
In advance, lets hope for another light hurricane season and for it to not damage family's homes and lives, and of course, football.

El Nino means a slow Atlantic hurricane season. But it only takes one to ruin your day.

The experts come out with their predictions in early summer and even they have no clue. It's just a coin flip and a wild guess it seems.
I know though that how hot it is has little to no impact in general.

Godzilla El Nino. On track to be the hottest El Nino on record. This creates wind shear in the Gulf & Caribbean. No tropical development. Second largest was 1997.

Bunch of different things play into it. El Nino/ La Nina weather patterns play a huge part. El Nino results in a quieter Atlantic season but a more hectic Pacific season generally speaking. The opposite holds true for La Nina although El Nino messes with it more than La Nina. Winter weather also factors into it somewhat (warmer winter = warmer water = earlier/bit more active season and vise versa). Ocean currents can factor with it along with weather patterns over various parts of the Atlantic/Africa. It's a huge number of things that factors into it.

True.
I was just noting in general that it can be hot as hell, but if the rest of the weather patterns aren't right, nothing will form.

This is the key and we still don't totally understand the roles each factor plays when they are all working together, esp at longer range. All the talk right now is about El Nino but the overall sst distribution from the C. Pacific towards N. America and then the sst distribution in the Atlantic probably are playing a bigger role in keeping things in check.

im registered for a tropical class this year and im excited as hell for it.
i think im starting to settle on going for my doctorate after undergrad with a focus on tropical meteorology.
