It's 3:30 and I can't sleep. Feel like I am facing down the Apocalypse. That may be bit dramatic, but I have been tracking this thing for what feels like an eternity. Will keep posting for as long as I can during landfall. Which I guess is today and in to Sunday.
I watched a bit of WINK's news broadcast this evening. They were showing expected sustained wind speeds and maximum gusts for Lee, Collier and Henry Counties. If I were faced with that, I don't think I could sleep either. You'd have to be an idiot to not feel anxious about what's headed your way.
Spoke with my Cape Coral friend again this evening. His slab is about 10' above sea level and he's back in the canals off of the river. He's not worried about storm surge, but is concerned about the wind. He said he wasn't too worried about Irma until he got about a twenty phone calls today from out of state friends and family asking if he was evacuating. He said that has made him second guess himself a bit.
Keep in touch tomorrow and Sunday, if you can. Good luck and be safe. You're in for an adventure. Hope it isn't TOO exciting.

This is her first interaction with a real landmass and Cuba is taking a little out of her. Hopefully this means less of a heavy impact for our friends in FL.

Thanks again. I feel the same way about the wind. Just watching video from the islands and now she is back up to a Cat 5. shite, when Gustav and Isaac hit Baton Rouge, they were like a Cat 2, and all of the oak trees fell. I will be on here as long as possible. Send well wishes to your friend on the Cape. We are in for a long couple of days.

Wow, if that holds true it will land right at my house. Good thing I am insured up.

And we can all enjoy the hurricane deductible. My house is like $422K, so outta pocket $8.5K
Seriously, a hurricane deductible. When I bought my townhouse in Baton Rouge in 2005, this wasn't a thing. After Katrina, when I re-fied, a fkn hurricane deductible. I understand why, but the insurance industry....

Yeah, but it is still better than losing everything. As much as I dislike the insurance agency I am glad I have them right now.
I don't think the storm surge will reach my house as we are east of I-75. The metal storm shutters are on the house and the house is one big piece of concrete and rebar. I am thinking lots of roof and water damage.
I am just tired of worrying and ready for this show to start. It feels like we have been waiting forever for this damn thing.

I am with ya. I have flood (I-75 is behind my canal in my backyard) and actually my house is elevated enough I can drop flood. With the flooding 2 weeks ago, I decided flood insurance for $545/yr was worth it. Water didn't come close, but c'mon, why not?
We are also East of 75, like directly behind it, as I said. We have a concrete home with hurricane impact windows, so no shutters. I had never seen the shutters before, coming from LA.
I think Andrew taught FL a lesson in construction. I live in a fortress. Well, we will see, I guess.

I believe flood insurance takes 30 days to be active. You're not instantly insured with payment as I understand it.

you can NOT get Flood Insurance for your home once a hurricane is in a certain quadrant on a map...not only that, but if you're adding it to your current policy it takes 30 days to go into effect
I'm watching wfla on facebook live and they are talking about possible outages in the next day or two.

I have flood insurance, it was required. Even though I could get a LOMA and drop it, but I'm obviously not dropping it. We are not leaving. No evac here. The next 72 are gonna be a wild ride.

Is that the same area Charlie made landfall back in 04?

Hardcore my man, I hope you guys are safe. We are at a Disney resort for the time being. I am thinking about heading north this morning.

After looking at the GoM wind vectors, I'm even more confused as to what inevitably pushes Irma N from the Westward trend. I wish someone more knowledgeable than myself could explain this to me.
Look at the water vapor loop and you'll be able to see why a turn to the north will happen. Looking at lower level maps it's hard to tell but the water vapor shows the upper levels and shows very clearly a trough digging down through Louisiana towards the gulf that will keep Irma from moving much further westward.

I just saw the news say that all roads are clear and the traffic of yesterday is over. Google maps confirms it. Smooth sailing.

I have those neighbors. They set the timer and don't turn it off. Ever.
Didn't you say you are in NPR?
