My statement comes from the inundation map. They need to check the potential rise if they are in that area.

One chart I looked at shows they are in evacuation zone B. But dammit they have one of those little manmade creeks in thier backyard.

I would assume those will flow over already if I was staying.

D. Estimated (by SFMR or visually) Maximum Surface Wind Inbound: 145kts (~ 166.9mph)

I assume this was based on the 160kt flight level winds they encountered. 10% reduction for surface winds would make sense.

Scott asked gas stations to stay open as long as possible and said he would arrange for police escorts for employees to get out when needed.

Interesting.

Prison officials in Florida have been forced to conduct the largest evacuation of prisoners in state history, moving more than 7,000 inmates from work camps and community release centers to more secure facilities.

So that prison sitting on the water that said they weren't evacuating has evacuated. Wise.

Family in New Port Richey staying put. Didn't realize how far west they are until I looked at a map. Hope they make it out okay.

CAT4 Hurricane Irma - Hurricane Warnings Hoisted for S. Florida
I'd be worried about people in the Ft Myers area who don't think they need to leave because they stayed for Hurricane Charley and his 150 mph winds in 2004 and were alright. Irma is massive and Charley was very small. As a result the hurricane force winds for Charley were only like 10 miles from the center and the storm surge was minimal. Irma is going to catch a lot of them off guard if they think this is a Charley.

My wife's friend left, but her boyfriend is staying. Some of her friends are staying on the island. It's sad. They're going to die.

I saw your post in another thread about this same topic, and you're 100% correct.

No one who "stayed for Andrew", for example, stays for another storm unless they completely missed the brunt of the storm.

Google maps showing I-10 west is wide open all the way through Mobile and not much traffic in the metro, is this not reliable at all or is everyone really heading straight north to get out?
