Not positive, but pretty sure I've seen that video before and it's not from this storm

Florida has a pretty robust system . I think they had a program to replace all wood poles and design for 150mph winds .

Yeah, my neighborhood has buried power lines but FP&L have done a shite ton of work on the poles since Wilma in 2005. I hope we don't have too long of a power outage at my place.

I am extremely fortunate to be on the same main line as the local fire station by my neighborhood. My power never went off more than a few hours after any prior storms, when other homes in my neighborhood lost power for over two weeks. But this one has potential to be pretty bad so we'll see.

I'm hearing Soggy and Foxys are gone. Not confirmed by boots on the ground yet. I hope it isn't true. Two of my favorite watering holes in the world along with Elvis' Beach Bar on Anguilla. I don't see how Elvis' could have survived but I have hope.

St. John is a US territory. I'm talking about the shitty islands that are nothing outside of the resorts.

I'm also worried about the construction towers in downtown west palm. It's not like Miami but there are at least 10 huge cranes in downtown WPB.

Many of them have been hit dead on by a Cat 5. Some of y'all are acting like they got hit by their typical tropical storm and just need to replace the sand on the beach.

Well St Barths and Anguilla don't fit that description and they're incredibly nice. Nor do most of the BVI.

weather experts... what are the chances 200+ mph winds 500 feet up reach the surface?

I have been able to look at any more of the latest models. Is it still looking like a Ga /SC landfall is almost inevitable? I'm in Savannah.

Irma looks huge. More like Katrina-sized.

It's a good question, and one I can only really offer speculation on.

At the surface there's going to be a little boundary layer caused by frictional interactions with the ocean surface. Nothing like land clearly, but that I would think is why there's always higher winds just above the surface than at the surface. Now if this really has a significant impact? I'm not totally sure.

Good opportunity to buy a nice fishing rig or small yacht for next to nothing if the hull is sound. Just clean it out real good an replace the necessary electronics and pull the heads/intake manifold off the engine and clean the inside free of moisture and run a couple rounds of fresh oil through it. If the engine was never ran with water in it then it should be fine if properly clean out the moisture.

Tower cranes are pretty robust and can handle a lot of wind. They'll sway around a bit but are hard to take down.

The crawler cranes are another story.

youre jogging my memory a bit, duke.

that boundary layer definitely comes into play. i think alot has to do with heating as well. i just dont remember how to tie it all together.
