Because pressure is going to find the path of least resistance. The center is lower pressure than the arms of the storm. As the winds turn, they're constantly trying to find the lower pressure because the winds are higher pressure. The lower the pressure is in the center, the more intense the pressure outside the center is going to try to find that lower pressure. And the more this happens, the higher the wind.

Eh, it works.

I like to relate it to water flowing downhill. The pressure difference correlates to a height difference in this example. The larger the height difference for a set length, the faster the water will flow. For a lower pressure inside a storm, it creates a larger pressure gradient thus faster winds. The little details matter for maximum winds, as the steeper gradient right near the center could mean stronger winds for the same pressure compared to another storm.

You've got the general idea basically down though.

I'm assuming you're from Houston and have never lived in New Orleans, so you don't understand how shortsighted your attacks on Bob Breck are.

I know he's a local legend, and I'm not trying to rustle feathers. Hell, I'm sorry it side tracked the thread at all.

Look at the comments on his post though. People are losing their minds.

Perhaps he could take a page out of the NHC's official forecast discussion:

quote:

4. The chance of direct impacts from Irma later this week and this
weekend is increasing in the Florida Keys and portions of the
Florida Peninsula. However, it is too soon to specify the timing
and magnitude of the impacts. Elsewhere, it is too early to
determine what direct impacts Irma might have on the continental
United States. Everyone in hurricane-prone areas should ensure that
they have their hurricane plan in place.

Well at least Shelby is remaining calm......in response to a question asking when does she expect it to turn....

Meteorologist Shelby Latino FOX 8 · Friday/Saturday... if it doesn't start making it then, I will start to be more concerned. But at this point, it looks as though it will turn and most indications are that it will. A valid concern is that it is a very strong storm with a lot of momentum. I want to see it slow down a little, and start climbing north by Saturday.

Get gas today and propane. The line at bjs for gas was longer than i expected this far from landfall.

People are preparing.

We sold out of 2,000 gallons of propane yesterday in Vero Beach. That's over 550 of your BBQ propane tanks.

I lived in far south Florida (Collier County) when Andrew hit. If you live in Lee, Collier, Dade, Monroe you have to drive north 5 hours just to get north of I10. I75 and i95 north will be parking lots. That far south, you have to give yourself an extra day early to evacuate.

There should be 3 threads pinned regarding this storm

1. A thread for people who actually know what they are talking about discussing the forecast. Nothing else

2. A thread for people who want to know if they are going to be safe in....

3. A "safe space" thread for those who need to debate irrelevant topics.

I would never visit threads 2 and 3.

I sincerely appreciate the post of those who know what they are talking about. I have learned a great deal just from reading. Please keep up the good work!
