And away to the stormcast forums I go.

That format makes my eyes bleed. Great info there though.

The colors on the color sat images show cloud top temperatures. The blacks and dark reds are colder. A tropical cyclone is basically taking all that warm moist air off the ocean and cooling the shite out of it. The more it cools, the more heat energy it is taking in to convert to winds and a stronger storm.

More deep convection wrapping symmetrically tells you the storm is picking up strength and organizing.
So, basically, this is Mother Nature's way of managing warming by cooling things off when they get too warm?

LINK

They aren't "real time" but as up to date as you'll come across.

GOES-16 ought to be sending some pictures back soon if it hasn't started already. That thing produces some amazing images.

I think NOAA2 may be done and heading home

ETA: if so... that would leave AF305 as the only plane currently in the storm

It's not really that purpose driven but yeah it's basically a big ole heat engine.

Rainbow or RBtop will get the point across. Let you see the eye and how the convection is doing.

Visable is awesome when the sun is over it.

The shortwave, Dvorak, and others arent going to be as useful.
