Maybe put a little back in case of emergency? Oh I forgot we cant encourage poor people to save for emergencies.

I do relatively well for myself and like to think I’m financially responsible. If I had to, I could evacuate on a moments notice for a week or so. But it would set me back quite a bit and even though living obviously comes first, I’d still have to assess the situation before pulling the trigger.

There are many, many people not in the financial shape that I, and most likely you, am in. The assessment to stay/leave is a much harder decision for a lot of people to make and for many more it’s not even a decision because it’s impossible.

Also, for most people here in the states evacuating is a matter of driving a couple hundred miles and a lot of us know people elsewhere where we can crash for a few days if we don’t want to/can’t afford a hotel. That’s not the case on a relatively small island.

I can lay some blame on those that stayed on the coast instead of finding a way to a more inland location that is at least relatively safer. But I’m not going to be an a-hole and say poor people are stupid for not evacuating when it’s quite frankly impossible.

Its always weird to me how these things never really look THAT bad on radar Of course I know it’s a monster

First off, this system is still a good ways offshore. Because of this distance, radar echos are not that quite accurate.

Also, rain will attenuate the radar making any thing on the other side of a strong storm appear weaker.

Another issue with radar is that a radar has a scale to it, and some storms may go beyond the scale.

Fascinating to watch it get out of balance and now, look like it's getting going again...hope not though.

It would probably if it was stalled in just the open water a little north or west of the location. Again, not ramp up to a 5 or anything but would have room to strengthen. The core bumping up against an island and the shallow waters around there is keeping Dorian in a mild weakening phase at this point. I suspect the winds are more like 120 mph right now.

I do think there will be a modest pressure drop once Dorian moves north initially. Won't last long as shear picks up a little bit and heat content drops as Dorian moves north. It'll be a slow weakening until Dorian transitions to extratropical.

I remember when I was a kid, I was told that there was no way to know where a hurricane was going to go. It was like a drunk a-hole playing Pin the Tail on the Donkey.

When I was in Minnesota the locals used kayaks to evacuate and these people have power motors to escape from the Hurricane. You rarely hear about deaths from these types of storms in Minnesota and that’s because they escaped.

Ok now you are just trolling us. No way you are that fricking stupid.

It’s gaining strength and causing destruction by the minute. It will continue to ramp up until it eventually starts to move.

Best advice I can give you is listen to your local experts and the NHC.

They are your best source for information, especially when you and your love ones lives depend on it.

I would have the financial means to evacuate for a month in a hotel, but I don't live in a hurricane zone. I probably wouldn't though. I would go camping somewhere plenty far from it. I have cold and hot weather camping gear. I'd be in some state park somewhere for 5 dollars a night or back woods camping catching fish for food. I don't have kids tho.

To where? You think they all have passports to just start with? It isn't uncommon to wait hours on a ferry that never shows up on a good day down there. We will be flying tons of water and aid into Marsh Harbor when they get the airport back open, but even getting it to the outer islands will be another story because all of the boats are now lobster habitat. Go Fund Me accounts will be robbed like Jesse James. Resilient people down there though. They will be back unlike Haiti or Puerto Rico who depend on Uncle Sugar to take care of them.

Good post.

PLEASE tell me the last Cat 5 hurricane to hit Minnesota.....you are either drunk, have a head injury, or are very very ignorant.

There was a big discussion on that in this thread last night. You should read a little of it.
What was the gist? It really was what was said a decade ago.

I recall about ten years ago people always saying a storm this strong went where it wanted and that was north, poleward

I definitely remember people saying this just a few years ago.

I guess they changed their minds.

Now they said highs, lows, sheer, dry air, the Gulfstream and Trump steer hurricanes.

It was about some hurricane hunter who went to Abaco. The guy has a big hipster beard. It said that some school he was in as a shelter collapsed and he hasn’t been heard from. There were some responses saying bs so that may be why it was deleted.
