To where? You think they all have passports to just start with? It isn't uncommon to wait hours on a ferry that never shows up on a good day down there. We will be flying tons of water and aid into Marsh Harbor when they get the airport back open, but even getting it to the outer islands will be another story because all of the boats are now lobster habitat. Go Fund Me accounts will be robbed like Jesse James. Resilient people down there though. They will be back unlike Haiti or Puerto Rico who depend on Uncle Sugar to take care of them.

That’s a perfect video to watch after some posts about how the government lies about the strength of these things.
Water lapping up to the rim of their basketball hoop. Damn.

Apparently it's difficult for some of you to understand, but not everyone has the money and resources to just fly out.
I grew up poor as hell and never flew until I had my own money as an adult even within the US, so yes I get that.
What I failed to consider is how many small islands there are and how difficult an en masse evacuation would be even if they declared a mandatory evac. It'd take a lot of boats and would have to receive assistance from other countries and hope other countries allow evacuees.. especially since Florida is right in the path.

Exactly. They ain’t tourists on vacation. Same goes for FL and other coastal states although that makes it easier.
In any case, “JUST GET OUT” is never that easy and it’s never helpful advice.
The only people I ever hear say that have never had to deal with a hurricane themselves.

Maybe on islands. We're on a Louisiana message board, the vast majority of posters have dealt with hurricanes and evacuations. It is easy to evac in the continental US, especially if you evac early.

No real such thing as mandatory evacuation anyways.

You didn’t mention whether you ever had to make the call or not.
Many people are not in a financial place to just leave home indefinitely and not know where the money will come from for gas, food and possibly shelter. Even if they do, they can’t get stuck away from their jobs for too long.
Basically, they are gambling on their short term financial future for something that may not even be necessary.
It’s not always financial either. It’s hard to leave your home when you want to believe it’s not necessary to do so. You want to be there in your community to help where needed. It’s a complex issue.

I pray people donate to Bahamas after this disaster. That Atlantis & Bahamar escape intact, to allow them the needed hotel rooms for the recovery and aid groups, and subsequent needed tourism dollars in the coming months. Heartbreaking.

I saw someone on the Bahamas new and info page on FB state it's only 20 miles long and 7 miles wide "so there is nowhere to go".
Ummm, get the hell off the island. It's not like they didn't have days of warning.

Maybe if you are single and live by yourself and have no responsibilities to family members.
Not so easy if you have a family to consider. And aging parents with lots of medical needs and limited mobility. And pets you have to figure out where you can go with them.

A lot easier said then done. A week ago Dorian might not even make hurricane status and the path wasn't really close to where it has ended up. Many people don't have the means to travel away from their home in 2-3 days notice.

This. Lot of assuming on the last few pages.

The only issue I see here is the aging parents with medical needs. Anything else is an issue you create in your mind.
If it’s possible life or death, you get in your car and drive.

Yeah, I'll stay and risk death because I may have an issue finding a place that will take me with my dog.
GTFO

You laugh...but look at a lot of the people that stay behind in a hurricane and ask them why.
Many of them will mention their pets as one of the reasons.

I’ll live out of my car with my dogs. But I’m not selfish so
