Safeco is a good company, but they can be picky about who/what are they insure. They’re actually an off branch of Liberty Mutual. If you haven’t already, you should look at getting your auto bundled with your home. They have a good bundle discount for homes and a decent one for auto.

2% of your dwelling value sounds right. How far from the coast are you? Over 10-20 miles?

That’s also a major factor in addition to roof age, roof shape, roof type, along with construction/siding type. Brick homes get lower deductibles than vinyl, etc.

Have a 5% deductible on the business. Before Laura/Delta, I was under the impression that was 5% of the claim. I have a $67,000 deductible

We have State Farm at 2% storm and 1/2% everything else.

I am aware its not the best rated but I'm pretty nervous going to one of these companies the brokers offer but I've never heard of.

My State Farm guy is down the road and I can pretty much get in front of him whenever needed.

I think we pay $3,100 a year for $394,600 with everything else offered besides earthquake. Replacement value with escalators.

So $258 a month it looks. I've called Shelter before but claim they can't write Jeff Davis Parish. I don't know why.

Most carriers should have deductible options. One of which is to split the hurricane deductible to opt for a higher deductible for a lower premium. This most likely happened in your case but you need to check your dec pages always and don’t get upset if you waited too long on that. You’re issued a dec page right off and at some point the lack of knowledge of your coverages and/or attention paid to your coverages is your responsibility.

I’m an agent and this happens all the time, claims ferret out a lot of cluelessness and/or dishonesty when those who want the cheaper premium by cutting corners turn around and realize, too late, that coverage is just as important if not more important than saving a few bucks on premium.

There is a zero chance you have a $1000 hurricane deductible in the state of LA.

Lol you are an idiot. My mom just had two trees on her house and called Tuesday. Her deductible for named storm is still $1,000. She has Progressive.

I too have a straight $1000 deductible through UPC and the premiums are no different from State Farm and the coverage is actually better. I had State Farm for 44 years - home and auto. State Farm swings a big stick in LA and gets away with things the others don’t. I have so many friends that are disgusted with State Farm and their policies that they have dropped them and are very happy they did so.

We bought a new, much more expensive house last year. We chose our policy very much with this in mind.

We do NOT have State Farm.

Progressive is running a scam! Probably all insurances are.
I’ve had issues of jacking up premiums by them and Safeco after a claim.

I had Progressive when I filed a claim when someone broke into my house and stole all my guns, tv’s, damaged my door took and few other items.

They were incredible to deal with on the claim that was only about 4K.

Until I got my renotice in when my policy expired. Them assholes wanted to charge me double for my premium than what I was paying the year before for my homeowners insurance.

Wait till they refuse to pay!!! Many people in SWLA, and I mean thousands are still in lawsuits against State Farm for refusing to pay valid claims. I've been with them for 35 yrs and am leaving once I finally get resolved one way or the other. BEWARE!!!!

Just finished replacing shingles on roof from last years storm in Lafayette. State Farm .. first time I had to deal with deductible issue. FYI , my deductible was at 5%, which I wasn’t aware of , then I found out this is based on replacement cost of your house, not appraisal value. What a wake up call. I’ll be shopping soon.

I was shocked to hear of someone down here on the coast of FL getting a $500 hurricane deductible. After either Isaac or Gustav hit, my deductible went from $500 to a percentage of my home's value. I currently live in SWFL and it is 3% of my house's value.

Are you positive its value and not replacement cost.

And for the other A-hole's comments about taking chances and losing. I tried to buy down my deductible last year and was told (in an email) that was not possible. The lowest deductible Southern Fidelity offered was 10% of replacement coast. I tried shopping around but there was not many carriers that would insure in Louisiana or older homes with slate siding.

What a wake up call? Are you kidding? All homeowners is based on replacement cost…
