I had a 3 month old and my husband kept waking me up because the weather was bad. I was tired and did not care

Andrew hit during my first week of college at SLU. Seems like I had 2 days of classes before everything shut down. We took a wallop up in NW Livingston. Snapped trees and blew down a barn.

My wife and I rode that one out in our first apartment in BTR while she was pregnant with our first child and due any day. There is an old supersticion that a frightening event to a pregnant woman can "mark" the baby. My daughter was born 3 days later with a hurricane swirl cowlick in her front hairline over her right eye. Them old people know some shite!

The wife lived down there as a child. They evacuated to Patterson, LA. That didn't work out.

It's very sad and morbid but me and my entire circle of friends think of Leigh Ochi's disappearance in Tupelo whenever we talk about Hurricane Andrew to this day. Everyone's parents kept a closer eye on their kids that entire school year. Andrew's path whipped back through Central MS after wreaking havoc on South Florida and Louisiana. There were some tornadoes in our area but the damage was minimal. Leigh remains missing to this day and is presumed dead due to all the blood found at her home where she was abducted.

Andrew was the only storm that I went thru in btr, it was interesting the night of but camping out in 95 deg and 95% humidity for the next.week was no damn fun. Had access every 3rd day to a 4kw genny so freezer made it and we had fans for a day. I was on last flight into btr before the storm, dow was having an exec meeting and had a bunch of ppl on the plane, knuckle heads ....
We had some minor damage, none of my circle had any major issues but it taught this canuck that hurricanes are no fn fun

It was pretty rough in Baton Rouge but years later Gustav came along and made me forget all about Andrew.

I was there a week after it hit. It looked like an atomic bomb went off. 100% destruction as far as you could see. It even tore all the street signs out of the ground at intersections. They were just gone. It was very difficult to find your way around.

My grandmother lived out by the Miami Zoo in the Countrywalk neighborhood. The entire subdivision was destroyed.

Got a buddy from Homestead- he said they couldn’t find his sister’s house afterwards.

This is a guy who I’ve chased turkeys with for miles in S. Texas- tracked deer, been all over the Gulf in a boat.

Him telling me “doesn’t matter who you are, you use landmarks in some fashion, when every single thing you know is gone, it’s a trip”….that made me realize just how bad that storm was.

—we had no generator back then. Just waited around til the power came back on.
The cool thing was, with all the power gone in BR, the stars were amazing at night.

Bush I’s slow response to Homestead is one of the reasons he lost the election a few months later.
