Hurricane Andrew 1992 - 34 years ago this morning (FL) through Wednesday morning (LA)

Came through South Louisiana at night. Hate those.

Yeah. I remember losing power at about 5:30 PM and heard roofing shingles flying off all night long. Didn't discover the attic vent blown off until daybreak and was able to cover the hole shortly afterward since the winds had died down just enough by that time.

All it takes is one storm to create a record breaking Hurricane season. 1992 and Andrew were an example. Bad hurricane seasons don’t have to always be like 2005.

Was living in Ascension Parish at the time and went to bed with Andrew to come no where near us. Don't remember the exact time, maybe 2:00 AM all hell broke loose because Ol' Andrew decided to take a hard right.

My family moved to BR from New England a week before the storm hit. No power for a week. Definitely a welcome to Louisiana event. A huge oak crashed into our yard and put some holes in the roof above my brother’s room.

Core memory. Watching weather reports on hand held tv. Bundled up at grandparents house since dad worked at plant.

All family jammed in together.

Moved to Fort Lauderdale 8/18/1992, Andrew followed 8 days later


January 1st 1996 moved to Columbia, Maryland. Largest snow storm to hit January 6th. 29" in 2 days

Moved to Beaver Falls, PA outside of Pittsburgh May 27th 1998, major tornado for the area hits June 2.

Moved to Davenport, IA February of 2001, Mississippi River floods April 2001. Crests 1/2" from the top of the levy walls.

I remember every single one of them but Andrew was terrifying. Slept in the laundry room on top of a dryer. Woke up to the entire side of the apartment complex just destroyed.

in Natchez, they had every school gym full of people from S. LA. I remember my dad and some buddies running emergency power cabling and lights through the school hallways for generator power. Don't think they slept much for couple days until it was done.

Had an ex who grew up near miami zoo. Their childhood house got fuggled. Not a lick of roof sheathing remained. About as bad as you could get, while saying survived structurally intact.

Good friend of mine grew up in Homestead. Went to find his sister’s house after the storm- couldn’t even find her street.

His comment that will always stick with me…and this is a guy who hunts in the Rockies, Alaska…like a boy scout on dead reckoning roids…

“You have no idea how dependent we are on landmarks when the landmarks all of a sudden vanish”
