HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (WAFF) - A big change is in store for Huntsville City Schools this year when it comes to recognizing student achievement.

The school system will no longer recognize valedictorians and salutatorians, which are traditionally the students with the top two grade point averages in the graduating class.

Instead, they’ll use college terms where more students will be honored for their efforts

Isn't the valedictorian just the person who gives the speech?

That honor can go to any moron in the class, it is just traditionally given to the top students.

They are moving to the honorifics given to college students for academic performance (summa cum laude, magna cum laude, cum laude)

Doesn’t seem like this warrants any outrage tbh

So if I was the top student, I wouldn't have to go that extra mile to secure being the top student, which means I could frick off more than I would normally since I did just enough?

That sounds healthy.

Anyone watched hard knocks last night? The Raiders were giving that kid Ronald Ollie a chance and the D line coach got tired of his shite only a few days into training camp. The coach kept telling him his technic was wrong. All of a sudden he starts complaining he hurt his leg and skipped practice. Was scheduled to go see the trainers and didn't show up.

It got back to Jon Gruden told them to just cut him. If you watched him on Last Chance U, they held his hand. If the coaches told him something he got upset. He had the lady on there that helped the athletes hold his hand. He brought that same mentality to the NFL and didn't last 3 days.

You not doing kids any favors by doing this shite because the real world will eat them alive. You get a job, if you want a promotion, you work the hardest you will get one. You slap dick around, you will stay where you are. No one is there to say "okay well you deserve another chance"..

Couldn’t they just do both? Recognize the top two and also everyone who is cum laude and up?

In any event, eh. If I had graduated top of my class, I wouldn’t have to give a speech to feel good about that accomplishment.

Most colleges would still identify the valedictorian. Why take that honor away from a student?

Obviously, you were never in consideration for this honor.

Generally kids who are at the top echelon are internally motivated and don't need the "title"

The kid with the best GPA will still be cited as #1

Better than some schools I've heard of that have 40+ valedictorians.

When I worked at a HS I watched the battle for #1 and #2 ruin friendships

Two girls had similar GPA's. Guidance Counselor calls one to congratulate her on being #1. #2 loses her shite, does some digging and finds out the counselor actually misapplied the school's policy for calculating GPA. The correctly applied policy would have given it to her.

Caused a HUGE uproar. Ultimately the school decided to have "Co-Veledictorians"

The "rightful" student still threw a tantrum that lead to nearly all of her HS friends abandoning her.

Ever since they started doing the AP shite where they give those classes the ability to get above a 4.0, it's been useless anyway. Instead of encouraging kids to go after the subjects and topics that interest them, they are trying to cram as many AP classes in as possible. I support this move and hope this gets kids looking to find what they want to do instead of cramming in AP classes.

Most colleges do not do valedictorians, it's only really a factor at the very upper tier colleges in their admission process that it might even come into play.

My two oldest sons were Valedictorians at the same High School 2 years apart. They worked for it and it paid off in many ways. It’s still bragging rights 20+ years later.

Locally, there's a group of parents that have figured out the progression of classes to achieve the highest GPA. You must start high school as a freshman. There's absolutely no chance of a transfer kid to get it.

So, you now have a group of parents that push on their kids through this path. It's common to have a 15-20 way tie for first.

Of course these kids do nothing outside of academics and often crash and burn once they are given freedom in college.

A lot of schools take class placement (percentage) into account in admissions, which is why my HS quit giving class rankings.

Even lower ranking schools will give benefits to valedictorians. My college ended up giving small scholarships of a few hundred dollars to anyone who could show documentation of that fact.
