Roughly 35,000 Thoroughbred foals are born each year, right?
About 130 million people are born each year.
It's a numbers game mostly.

I’m too lazy to look it up
The numbers have been steadily declining

This is accurate. Secretariat was a freak of nature with an enlarged heart. We will probably never see another horse as good as him. But overall thoroughbreds have gotten faster.
Also those horses have been bred to be as fast as possible for a couple hundred years so they’ve been near perfected for a while.

And up to a mile they are faster. There are only a few high level races a year over 1 1/8 here. Commercial breeders aren’t looking to create the classic distance horse. Most races a mile and a quarter on (on the dirt) finish with the field staggering home

Hijack.
I'm reading Killing England right now and one passage mentions a 50 mile gallop through the night by a British General.
How fast on average could an important person travel that far on normal terrain? Would it be with one horse or several waiting like a relay?
/hijack.

Because horses have been bred for speed for thousands of years
At some point horses just cant get that much faster and we've probably reached that point
Humans have only recently discovered the health and workout technologies that can get them to peak physical performance so we see their speeds improving more drastically

So the horses knew about health and working out before the humans?

No
But they have literally been bred for speed for thousands of years. Breeding is what has made horses faster
Research and innovations in health and working out have made humans faster
Breeding humans to make them faster is probably frowned upon

It worked for the NFL and NBA

Umm, if they are running all out it may be best to relay the horses
There are plenty of 100 mile+ endurance races but they aren’t traveling at a full gallop the whole way.
I guess I have no idea what the answer is.

Hell, tell that to my horse. Even if we are walking to cool out he has to have his nose in front of any other horse riding with us

The goal of horse racing isn't to break records. It is to win races.
And by saving energy, they have a better chance to win additional races versus setting a record in a single race.
For humans, many times the world record is the goal.
As an additional note, I would like to point out that Sham was likely a once in a lifetime horse as well. And that fact is likely why the Derby and Preakness times are so good.
The Belmont? Who the hell knows. I think the jockey said that the horse just wanted to run.

I do like that people think secretariat is the only fast horse to ever live
And you have to agree that there isn’t much currently that really excels on dirt beyond a mile and an eighth due to breeding practices, correct?

The reason why is because horses run instinctively. Athletes change their running motions strides starts and everything to get an edge. A horse doesn’t do this.

You answered my general question. I Googlied for anyone who wondered.
The average cowboy horse could/can do 20-30 miles a day.
Military/fit horsies could(we still use them?) do 50-60 miles a day.

I don't think anyone is saying that. I think the point is that none of the fast horses since him have been able to beat some of his times. It's a relative discussion and sort of interesting one.

They don't drink protein shakes.

But some do get milkshakes....
Joke for the maybe 1 or 2 people who will get it.
