Memphis Ridgeway (mostly black school) is hosting Bolivar (not mostly black school) in a girls high school playoff game.

Ridgeway has a 35-17 halftime lead.

At halftime, there is a fight in the stands between scholars from Ridgeway. Police come in, pepper spray is deployed. etc.

Bolivar comes out and their girls are affected by the remnants of the pepper spray. Bolivars coach and administration refuses to finish the game. Ridgeway is obviously pissed. Parents and students start threatening Bolivar players and fans.

Is this:

(a) a forfeit by Bolivar for refusing to play
(b) a forfeit by Ridgeway for not having a safe environment
(c) a double forfeit and someone gets a bye in the next round
(d) Replay the game with no fans

The TSSAA chose D, which is probably the right call, although Ridgeway loses an 18 point halftime lead.

B - they’ll never change if you don’t penalize them.

something tells me that an 18 point lead at half is an indicator of the results on the no fan game...

what a crap situation.

I would say B - however that would put responsibility on Ridgeway - and everyone knows these days there is no accountability, so it would not be chosen.

Either (b) or (d). The non-host team should not be punished for protecting their girls.

For clarification, did they actually replay the game from start or simply postpone the remainder of the game to a later date?

deploying pepper spray in an enclosed space where 10+ kids are doing something requiring extreme physical exertion.

what could possibly go wrong?

Not being conditioned to pepper spray is a form of white supremacy.

No. The players didn't do anything wrong and the fans who fought don't care about consequences.

I get Bolivar making the decision to protect its girls but they were catching a beat down (no pun intended) on the court. Not sure there’s a “fair” way to handle this.

Wonder if Bolivar would have been ok with finishing if they simply cleared the gym of everyone not involved in the game.

well considering removing the fans does not remove the lingering effects of the pepper spray, probly not a lot of good.

I guess, although I find it interesting that the team that was winning didn’t have a problem with it. Not a bad opportunity to hit the reset button.

That's what threw me...

Like... wait... are you talking about Bolivar?

Anyways... award the game to Bolivar because... well... Ridgeway sucks.
