Depends on the kid.
I got a little pocket sized .25 when I was 8 or 9. Carried it while riding in thw woods.
I didnt get an actual fullsize until I was 14 or so. Even then it was just a .22

I wasn't ever given a handgun. I had a a lot of friends with Ruger or Browning 22s though

Gave my 6 yo a handgun. Sure he shot his mother during a tantrum, but she was a real bitch anyways and he likely saved me 1/2 my income.

I'm a huge gun enthusiast but I would say 18. A handgun is inherently more dangerous than a rifle and requires a more responsible and mature operator. Get him a deer rifle or a shotgun or hell, even an AR or AK before a pistol.

I saw a detective discussing murders on the Investigative Discovery Channel recently. He solved 387 murders.
He said since the small caliber bullets don't have the power to punch their way completely thru the body, the bullet will take the scenic tour throughout the body and do massive damage internally.
He said small caliber gunshots are usually fatal. He said the victim will usually die before a surgeon can repair the structural damage.

I had .22 growing up, however it was kept in the safe that I didn't have access to while at home. I got it when we went to camp and target shooting and stuff. I think I was around 12 when I got it, but it wasn't really "mine" until I was 17 or so.
IMO it's never to young to teach the fundamentals and safety that comes with a hand gun, but you shouldn't give a kid that young unsupervised access until they are a bit older and have enough experience with one.

Good lord, all you people freaking out about the OP wanting to give his 14yo a handgun. You don't know him, his kid, or the cAliber of the weapon. But you're all horrified.
