These all stay locked in a safe in my room when not being used, but he knows the combination and knows how to use each and every one of his fire arms.

Sounds like YOU have these guns and you allow him to shoot them with you. I doubt they are his personal guns (I know you bought them).

Wait until he turns another year or two older and wants to show off to his friends his arsenal.

The edit.

Or, as I like to call it - "The Owlie".

Pretty clutch edit. Got a long thread going then edits to add one word which no one notices. Now we know which posters are insane.

Giving an 11 year old the combination to your safe is a step too far for me, and I'm usually on the "batshit crazy" side of this discussion.

I bought him the .308 and 44 for his 7th and 11th birthdays. The rest were Christmas and birthday gifts from his grandfathers.

ETA. I just remembered, my dad gave him a 10 gauge this year as well for when he's big enough to handle it.

A young kid shoting a 44 mag can't be much fun. I can hardly get through a box of 20 before I'm done with mine and move on to the 40. Seems like a little much for a child but to each his own.

ETA: just noticed the 44 is a rifle. Big difference. My bad.

I guess I was raised differently; my dad didn't have a safe, just a closet full of guns. We lived out in the country, and I was taught from a very young age gun safety and how to respect firearms. He would let me come home from school and shoot anytime I wanted to whether he was home or not. I have taught my son the same values and responsibilities of gun ownership. And he knows good and god damn well not to take out firearms with his friends around because they're all a bunch of videogame playing city boys who think it's cool to watch people get shot up on tv.

It's a single shot crack barrel rifle. It really has very little recoil. He killed his first deer with it at 7.

Edited my post and it's very different from a handgun.

Are you saying its impossible to trust your kid and expect them to do stupid things on occasion simultaneously?

My dad had a shotgun in his closet when I was growing up. Did I do some stupid things? Yea sure did, but one thing I knew never to do was touch that shotgun unless my dad was there and told me too. was the same way with the BB gun pistol he had. If I wanted to shoot I had to ask him and he would bring it outside and we would shoot. Then when we were done he would pick it up and I knew better than to mess with it.

Not the worth the risk IMO. There is a difference between not trusting your kid and to expect lapses in judgment when peers are around.

Me too. I'm going to beat the older one tonight for embarrassing me in this thread.

It seems you have not had much experience shooting handguns.

So why would you want to give a killing machine to a 11 year old?
