Depends on the maturity of the child. My dad bought me a .22 pistol when I was 12 along with my two brothers who were older. I know some 18 year olds who I wouldn't trust with a handgun.

I have no problem with buying a kid a .22, so long as he doesn't have access to it unless through you.

Third is pretty damn high don't you think and the rest is just common sense so no link is necessary. Of those three where accidents are concerned, care to guess which one has the lowest chance of survival?

I'd say 6 months is a little young.

considering firearms are the THIRD leading cause of death for children 10-14, I hope you never put your kid in an automobile or let him ride on an ATV.

The ATV thing is a valid comparison, the Car thing isn't- it needs to adjusted for exposure.

They are never too young to start teaching about gun safety. Take a look at these three:

The one in the middle looks vicious. She seems like the type that would shoot an intruders cawk off instead of putting him down.

I see the OP went back and edited to say "plastic toy handgun". If that's the question, then it's a stupid one.

Having a handgun in the house an teaching your teen how to use it properly is fine. No need to just give a kid a handgun IMO.

Thinking of Christmas gift ideas and I think the min age is 11 for plastic toy handgun. Is that too young?

Tensions being what they are right now with law enforcement, it strikes me as foolhardy to give a kid a handgun, even a toy one. Cops are liable to shoot first, ask questions later like they did with the 12 year old kid in Cleveland.

The I guess I'm a bad thing parent. My five year old has so many "toy" guns it's not even funny. Pistols, shotguns, rifles bow and arrows and nerd guns.

But in all seriousness, I hunt a lot, he has been several times and he knows better than to touch any of my guns. He knows they are not a toy. I don't leave them where he can get to them, but teach him better

My kid is 11 and he has a 308 rifle, 44 mag rifle, .22 handgun, 3 .22 rifles, a 20 gauge, and a 12 gauge.

These all stay locked in a safe in my room when not being used, but he knows the combination and knows how to use each and every one of his fire arms.

An AR or an AK is much larger, easier to control, and safer than a pistol. It would be much more difficult to have an accident with a semi automatic rifle than with a semi automatic rifle. Obviously you don't have much experience with firearms.
