My neighborhood board was in an uproar because some guy was basically trying to get affirmation to call CPS because some 9 year old stay home after school for about an hour or two. He also plays outside.

All the helicopter parents said CPS needs to be called. Fortunately a few told him to seek more information prior to getting the government involved.

People began saying leaving a 9 year old home alone is illegal (it is not at all). Times have changed, basically saying today's society is so dangerous (the helicopter parents don't realize it is safer now than ever).

I would think some 9 year olds can handle it. It should be based on their maturity along with ensuring other things (like the kid has a phone, a neighbor to go to if needed, etc.).

I brought the question about what is the age limit they thought should be set where some nosy aholes wouldn't go running to CPS and they said when the kid was old and strong enough to fight off an intruder. I think a lot of adults wouldn't be able to stay home alone at that qualification.

So a 25 year old woman could theoretically not be able to stay at home alone?

I would let a/my 9 year old ride a bike home from school and stay home alone for a while.

I would tell them NOT to play out front though.

I think my parents would leave me home at 9 or 10, but I had an aunt that lived next door that they would tell I was going to be home alone. I never stayed home completely by myself. Probably wasn't until 6th or 7th grade that I could spend a couple of hours home alone.

If they aren't old enough to walk to and from school alone I wouldn't leave them at home unsupervised

Yeah. But they said a 25 year old know how to call 911.

I don't know wtf these parents teach their kids but mine knows how to call 911. We went over it before he even went to kindergarten.

I was a latchkey kid starting in fourth grade. I think I was nine. At 10 I was watching my younger siblings.

why did they feel the need to get CPS involved and not handle it like adults and talk to the parents?

The guy said they play in the back yard or stay in the house.

He had a separate complaint about them playing in the front while the parents were home. I lost it at that point.

I used to come home from school in 3rd grade, cook for myself and whatever else for a few hours until my family was home from work.

I can't dig up the law in La right now but the only set law is how old a kid must be to WATCH kids under a certain age. Home alone at 9 is fine. If he was watching his 5 yr old as well, it would be illegal IIRC.

definitely depends on the kid, his communication ability, etc.

I'm sure these days 9 year olds know how to hack into the Pentagon. Dialing 911 seems pretty elementary.

because the parents ignore him.

Probably because he's always creeping on their kids.

I think the family is also Asian so it's a culture thing as well. They tend to keep to themselves.

There were countless people that kept the same narrative that today isn't the same as it was 20 years ago. The tards don't realize how safe it is compared to 20 years ago.

Not only is it safer, but we also have things like cell phones, security cameras, etc to help ensure things are fine at home.

Most non-disabled kids should be able to do it by 11 or 12. Some 9 year olds can do it for non-extended periods of time.

I can recall letting my 9 year old stay at home alone while we ran a quick errand (60-90 minutes), but we wouldn't leave for hours at a time until she got a little older.

Hell, by 12 she was babysitting neighborhood kids.

The nosy neighbors threatening to call CPS can go to hell with the SJWs - they are just as bad. The neighbors need to take the time and be neighborly and offer their assistance as needed (If there is a problem, our home is open) instead of being like they are.

People suck.

9 is too young, IMO.

11-12 seems right to me.
