Fire him, this topic reeks of boomer logic.

What kind of crap is this? I’m Gen X or millennial depending on how you define it and a good salesman.

We don’t all get a trophy, but if we perform in the top echelon we expect a big trophy. We also don’t want the dead wood slowing us down. We work very hard and put our personal reputation on the line, often taking calls night and weekends or being gone all week. We miss our family.

I literally do no take vacations, I sit on 30a on my phone or writing proposals.

F**k this boomer logic nonsense and consider a job teaching first graders. If you can’t run with the big dogs…

Back in the day if you weren’t spending a shite ton of money in sales on clients you were doing it wrong. If you wrangle this guys spending in your could be cutting into your revenue stream.

This money wasn't spent on clients.

I’m really curious what this guy spends a week/ month OP? As I said, if he is routinely spending $500+ eating out of a weekend that’s nuts. As in, he has some sort of problem probably and it’s eventually going to catch up to you.

I don’t think there’s anything wrong at all spending $250 on a dinner, even for 1. As said that’s a $100 bottle of wine, a nice cocktail or whiskey, a $80 steak, a couple sides, and a crappy tip.

But if that’s a once a week thing and he’s hitting up Ruth’s Chris type places for $100 meals for his ‘cheap’ dinners that’s a sign of a problem.

I’d be curious what his pay would be compared to others in the field, and like I said your biggest issue is why the rest of the team sucks so bad?

Keep a total and add it to his 1099 or W-2 as income. Otherwise, just mention it to him that you are ok with it for now but that over the per diem you have to class it as wages.

Set him straight right now! Give them an inch they’ll take a mile. He’ll push that envelope as far as he can.

I’ve got a better idea.

He’s just getting the “top producer bonus” which increases the daily limit for that guy.

If the other employees want that, they have to outsell him. and if he wants to keep that perk he has to stay on top

I’d throw him through a wall to assert who the boss is.

There have been lots of good suggestions on how to handle it. Here’s a thought or two about WHY it should be handled.
Ignoring this will change the dynamics of your business. And it is your business not his. He knows you know. Ignoring this shows weakness. And more likely than not, others know about it and will think the same thing. They’ll also wonder if they should get over on you too.
Hint: This guy is not going to retire any time soon. And he won’t retire after 20 years with you. You’ll have to do without him sooner or later. So…
And no he won’t quit if you rein him in. Any other job worth having will have rules too. And they will enforce them.
Per diems don’t make sense under these circumstances. A legit business expense should be treated as such no matter how much it is. A boondoggle is a boondoggle no matter how little. Make employees justify and reimburse. It’s easy really.

Tell him you aren't going to nickle and dime him, but he doesn't need to be shitting all over you. Professionally
