I had this reoccuring nightmare visit me again the other night. There is some damn class in my dreams that I have not gone to (and it seems to be the same one in each of these dreams), the entire semester...and I just know I'm going to fail it. This never happened in real life though, I just dropped said class. Dreams are weird.

Just got an email from a student. I'm going to copy and paste it here:

"I dont understand none of this stuff teach. What am I supposed to be doing for the due."

That's it. No salutation. No "All the best." Nothing but those two sentences.

I'm assuming it's in reference to the essay that is due tonight by midnight.
Where in the frick do you teach?

Tell him to stop by your office hours.

My wife (no pics) is a high school "teach" and these kids shorthand/abbreviate everything. I guess is the texting generation. Most of the students call her either "Mrs", or a shortened non-sensical version of our last name.

They also have difficulty with capitalization and pronunciation, as well as, they simply do not understand that a teacher should be addressed in a different manner than the one in which they address their friends.

So the fact they are doing this in college does not surprise me at all.

And remember... this is a kid who graduated HS and got accepted into a college.

Don't worry. I will. I'm a total pushover. But my Rate My Professor ratings are stellar.

Have him meet you at the office. Chew his arse out. Then guide him to a C-level essay.

Chew him out again afterwards.

You could be the difference in this young man's path in life. Right here, Right now.

True story

I know these guys though. Many of them. They're feast or famine. Turnarounds or laid off. Welders are very similar. Their gross annual income may average 140k a year. But frickKK that lifestyle. I like my m-r 7-4 every other Friday off for 40k less.

Now let that hectic job lead to a permanent operator or planner position at a plant and we're talking careers.

That grates but you have to explain to him what's due. I'd have to include a comment that his email was unprofessional in its grammar and that future employers would not receive it well.

I know it's a dead horse topic but very valid point. A sprained ankle keeps those guys out of work. I can prop my foot up on my desk in a cast and make computers go beep/boop.

This doesn't seem like a swallowing of pride moment, but more like some student procrastinated till the last day, and is looking for a rope to help pull them out of the hole they dug themselves into. If that's the case, then offering them a rope would be a terrible idea. They're not going to learn from their failures if you remove the consequences.
This is an excellent opportunity for you to teach this student a lesson on personal responsibility and accountability.

Depends. As the teacher, do I have tenure yet?
