How would law enforcement look without qualified immunity?

A bill that would make it easier to sue police officers and other government officials for violating people’s civil rights was introduced in the U.S. House by two lawmakers Thursday
quote:
If a police officer can be sued for enforcing a valid law, “Why would I even want to work?” asked David Thomas, a professor of justice studies at Florida Gulf Coast University.

Welcome to being a doctor, CPA, ect. Get some liability insurance.

One and the same according to police unions

The second quote is a straw man. This is about police who abuse their powers and violate people's rights, and that douchebag tries to make it about police just trying to do their job. Does anyone argue in good faith anymore? Or was it always a myth?

One of the major reasons crooked cops aren't held accountable.

Probably the same way it did for the 70+ years Section 1983 existed before the Supreme Court established QI.

Like Gordon would change his niche

Yes. Being a CPA and a police officer are exactly the same as to liability. Doctors pay more for liability insurance per year than officers make as yearly salary. Another excellent example. Great stuff, keep it coming.

Radical groups will sue cops that did nothing wrong just to drain them of money. It will be financed by Axel Baldwin, Chelsea Fondler, etc.

Current QI does NOT cover someone who commits a 1983 civil rights violation. QI isn’t about shielding someone who violates civil rights or commits a crime. It is about people not filing suit because they don’t like the way the officer resolved a neighbor dispute or a barking dog call.

So all the professors of justice studies would resign?

This is 100% correct. And the guy who commented about the time prior to QI, get real. Plaintiffs lawyers weren’t filing suit for everything under the sun 70 years ago. QI was created because of our current litigious climate.

Sounds like you guys are about to get paid more or will enter other industries.

What law enforcement? In this climate, every single person that got stopped by a cop or arrested would sue them for everything. How long you think it would take for a guy making $40k a year to have enough of that crap and walk.

They can still file suit, no?
I'd imagine the private sector (insurance companies) handle this better than state/local government self-insured funds.

If you were enforcing a valid law with correct procedure, they shouldn’t win the lawsuit.
I don’t see how this is any different then holding anyone who deals with the public in a social service accountable for what they do on the job.

Right, because cops get to choose their customers and they are often trustworthy and respectable people worth doing business with.

Right? As a counselor we get insurance through the American Counseling Association as members for a whopping $100 a year and around $50 a year premium as a student and $150-ish a year as a professional.
And Counselors/Therapists get sued all the time especially in cases of a client who is suicidal and the family wants someone to blame.

I agree with it, however, all elected officials and bureaucrats should follow this as well.
