How were old world armies so easily out smarted?

Talking about like Alexander the Great, Hannibal era of warfare.
I get how they we're so easily outflanked, it's tough to move 10's of thousands of people and supply trains in an organized fashion, but it seems like they were constantly tricked, at least according to the sources.
Hannibal for example ran rampant on Rome for over a decade by essentially traveling a unique path then tricking the Romans by hiding Calvary, forcing Roman troops into marching into a small area, then cutting off their retreat with said Calvary.
Something to do with "honor" where most generals never considered the other side might try something deceptive?

The Romans outsmarted Hannibal. They sat in their cities and villages fortified and let Hannibal roam around and his army was worn down from attrition.
Warfare back then was very hard to plan for due to a lack of communication between scouts and leaders. There was very few pitched battles that were actually planned by both sides. Most of the time a simple scout confrontation would lead to a massive battle.
So to answer your question: "why were armies outsmarted back then?" It was due to a lack of communication by everyone

Reconnaissance wasn't as advanced back then as it is now

I mean sure after he dominated their armies over and over and over and they finally figured out if they just avoided him he'd have to leave eventually

they trusted Darth Flavius to identify the enemies armaments

Those idiots stood across from each other and shot long guns. Their Wonderlic scores is low.
I'd be the guy that moved around the side

Oh yea and that one time Hannibal tricked them by tying torches to oxen the Romans mistook for fleeing troops

I can just picture the first guy to question that.
"Yeah, how about we don't stand right in front of the people shooting at us...I'm gonna go over there and shoot."

I don't think the Romans or Carthaginians used guns.

As stated communication was almost nil. And there was a lot less training in tactics, most training was for individual fighting skills.

I mean for a lot of these wars in the ancient world, these armies were literally just peasants or slaves that they threw into the fight. There was very little training on overall tactics and it was utterly impossible to communicate

Why don't you tell me what happened to Carthage then?
Work smarter, not harder.
