I was a Manager and had 2 bosses over 30+ years. Both were VP’s and excellent mentors, loyal to me and friends.
Their offices were 50 miles away and the big bosses were 100 miles away.
I had 150+ employees to manage.
I earned their trust in that they allowed me to run my area with little to no sticking their nose in my business.
All I did was shoot an email to them every so often telling them something going on in the area. Every 7-14 days I would call them and give updates and basically shoot the bull.
They only called when their boss needed information.
We were able to vent to each other and I was allowed to speak my mind.
I was always respectful and at the end of the day, they were my boss and I respected what they wanted and supported it in front the employees. But at least they gave me the opportunity to share my support or objection.
We were never at odds because of that relationship.
Now we all bitched about the corporate BS and things we all disagreed with.
I miss those guys but have no love lost for the corporate royalty that made our jobs miserable.

Very well. When she departs I will as well.

I don't know. He is in Denver and I haven't spoken to him in about a month. But when we do talk, its fine. He lets me do my thing.
I consider that as about as good of a relationship you can have with a boss.

I am the boss of me these days.

I've had the same boss for going on 35 years. He's given me some good raises throughout my time and agreed to let me move out of state last year and work from home.
However, he's part owner of the company (a small percentage of it) and in his mid 70's with health problems. He's become a nasty curmudgeon over the last 4-5 years and is well past retirement. He doesn't have any solutions for any problems that arise, is just plain angry most days and doesn't inspire anyone around him. He makes us have two team meetings a day, in my opinion, just to take attendance, see who is working and bitch at someone.
I keep hoping he will retire but I may beat him to it when I turn 60 next year.

I get along with my boss. We worked together at a previous place and he left. He left and went to another company. He called and recruited me to go with him and made it worth my while pay wise. We talk everyday and get along great

Pretty well by and large. We both are high achievers and he pretty much leaves me alone.

Good bosses make shitty jobs alright.

Always got along well with everyone higher than me on the org chart.
It probably had a lot to do with showing up on time, doing what I was paid to do, and learning everyone else’s job to become a better coworker.
That was a VERY rewarding state of mind. I never knew why I was surrounded by so many entitled narcissists who expected to work less and have other people do their jobs.

I know my "line manager" well enough to know what pisses him off, so any time somebody does that I try to bring it up. We get along well enough for us to get a laugh out of it.

The only reason I’m gonna go to his funeral is to find out where his grave is.
