Im sure my uncle could use some help and if not the kid could always pull weeds in the fields.

Wrong. Let it be known you aren't going to be there to rescue him later and he'll have to figure it out on his own, so it's time to get started NOW in toughening up.

That's what's wrong with so many of todays 20 something yr. olds, they think it's their parents job to rescue them when things get tough. I've got a 27 and 33 yr. old that learned that the hard way, even though I did my best to get them to be more self sufficient. Ultimately, it's up to them once they are grown arse adults.

Everyone is giving suggestions about manual labor over the summer, but it seems like the thread starter is more worried about his personality than his work ethic. If he is good in school, plays well on team sports, and is well liked by his friends and teammates, then I don't see what the problem is.

Some people aren't overly macho or gregarious. Maybe he's just a quiet guy who lacks bravado. I see no reason why that means he would fold when faced with something difficult in life.

Are you insinuating if Gramps wasn't a carpenter no one would have known how to drill holes into a piece of wood?

You’re spot on. It’s more of a mental toughness issue. He plays football, offseason workouts, etc. It’s not a physical toughness that he needs.

He’s 15...he will work it out. His brain has 10 more years of cooking before it’s done. That being said, all you can do is not be a helicopter parent.

Forget it. If he isn’t tough by 15, he probably won’t ever be. Just support him.

You’re probably going to have to rely on him when you are in your 80s and weak. You don’t want to find out then that he is still pissed at you for trying to toughen him up when he was 15.

What would have made you assertive and confident at 15?

A cold beer after a long hot day in the field.

Alternatively, buy him a hooker (schools out and the pussy supply is saturated, driving down prices).

I don't think there is one set way to help a kid with his confidence. What works for one might not work for another.

Provide opportunities for him to have experiences he hasn't had yet. This will help him find himself to some degree. It will allow him to learn new things and have more to talk about. Just think of things he hasn't been introduced to yet. Just communicate with him more. Go take him for a ride and just talk.

Or you can pay a hooker to go flirt with him..
