How to tell a friend their breath stinks really bad?

I am looking for opinions on how to tell a friend their breath stinks? I mean this person could chew gum, eat mints etc and their breath would still be horrible.....Something has to be wrong like rotting teeth or more serious. And all of this persons friends all talk about how bad the breath is... And he likes to close talk too.. Get all up in your face and breath all over you with this disgusting un human breath!
Any ideas? Trying not to hurt this persons feelings but enough is enough!!!!!

maybe tell them about how you always have fresh breath becuase you brush your tongue when brushing. maybe they'll try it out.
Or, they may have halitosis. I've always been perplexed that people with REALLY bad breath can't notice it. Anytime I drink coffee I always intentionally avoid speaking to anyone until I can rinse my mouth out first.
