re: How Strong Is Your Accent?

I have a generic American accent that you hear on newscasts or tv/movies. I mean my voice isn't as appealing as a newcaster or actor, but I have the same general pronunciation.

I grew up in Baton Rouge for 17 of my first 18 years but my parents aren't from the US. Most of the people I knew in my childhood didn't have strong regional accents either. My freshman year roommate was from Kentucky and had a super strong accent, and until he started college, he had no idea he didn't sound like most of the country.

I was surprised how much stronger the southern accents in Alabama were compared to the rest of the south (I have basically only ever driven through Mississippi, so I am not really comparing it to the accents there).

Man. I'm from lake Charles. I go there to referee basketball games. That's a thick accent there in Starks and they get into their panther basketball

I don't think it's that strong,but it may be.

I live in Gadsden,AL.I lived 2 hours South in the Tallassee/Eclectic area for 15 years.I was asked more than once where I was from because I didn't sound like I was from there.

Yes!!!! But it always in the ears of the beholder.

For instance, we had to live in Iowa for 3 years. Our NOLA-born ears immediately picked up on the (disconcerting) ubiquitous flat Mideast Iowan nasal twang that was everywhere.

On the subject of accents, one of our Iowa acquaintances insisted, sometimes heatedly, that while we had Cajun accents (because we were from Louisiana and everybody there is Cajun in her mind), Iowans had no accent. They spoke pure American.

I told her that we certainly could hear her regional accent. And it was strong. This drove her to further defend the unaccented purity of her, obvious to us, twang.

She never conceded. Poor thing. And she was a teacher of English, drama, and journalism.

I lived a big chunk of my life in Houma/dulac, and that dude even sounds like farmer Fran to me.

My accent is some mix of north shore country and down the bayou speed talk cajun, some days I can hear it and some days I can’t.

How drunk am I??

I'm not sure what my accent is, people in diffrent states can tell im from louisiana and love my accent. I'm from Ascension, so I guess its country with a little cajun flair. People from Louisiana swear im not even from the United States, they think im from Canada, but I guess thats where our cajuns came from.
