Mine's very faint. I travel the country and people don't realize I'm from the south.

I was born and raised here, but never picked up the accent. People say they only hear it when I drink or talk about food.

My mother was a professor at UA who emphasized proper grammar and diction. Maybe that's why.

But how strong is your southern accent?

Eta dammit was supposed to go on the OT.

Kind of yatty. I can neutralize it somewhat but when I’m in the NOLA area it comes out pretty strong.

Very strong, though I am told I sound 'more articulate' than what someone expects from a rural Southerner.

Most of my peers have either passively or actively abandoned it in their professional pursuits, but I'm a stubborn frick and refuse to make it go away. I feel like it is betraying my home and heritage.

I sound like the TV. That's where I got most of my speech from.

I don’t think it’s very strong but other people have commented on it.
Apparently I “talk country”.

If you've heard folks from the River Parishes talk, you can imagine my accent. I was in Tennessee during my Army years and a guy running a marina asked me what part of Louisiana I was from. He knew by my accent that I was a Coon-arse.
Lots of people always ask me, "are you a Cajun?" And once a woman from Boston on a cruise ship told me that she could sit and listen to me talk for hours.
Coon-arse Forever!

I'm from one of the few enclaves in LA that bestows neutral accents. Actually had a woman basically argue with me on the phone that I couldn't have been born and raised in LA because of it. Not everybody's from Brusly lady.

Not much of one, when people find out I'm from Texas they are surprised. But I can easily slide into my accent if I'm around good ol' boys.

You mean how strong is your Southern accent?

So "proper grammar and diction" is not having a Southern accent?

Well a southern accent is considered "lazy speech". My mother didn't allow that. Proper grammar and enunciation were requirements in my house growing up. We pronounced our Gs.
