Wasn’t long ago $75k did ok. Maybe not extravagant, but ok. It doesn’t even go much further in Louisiana if contributing to 401k and paying the extremely high homeowner insurance.

This is what’s scary. I feel 75k was a nice middle class salary not too long ago. Enough to own a home a car etc. now it’s like closer to poverty than what I described

A household can be a single mom who works 20 hours a week (or not ant all) and is on food stamps and welfare. Or a retired widow living on nothing but SSI.
It’s difficult conceptually because our picture of the median is kind of a local median, not the median for everyone in the country.
