Recently unemployed, 24, BS Finance from LSU.

I'm looking to do some temp work, preferably accounting/finance, in Chicago. How quick can I find something? Something temp could pay the bills until I land something full time, and it would be great if I could find something in 1 or 2 weeks.

If it's longer than that should I try to work as a barback/bartender for extra cash? I have enough to make it through August but after that I'm going to be really stretching it.

Very quick. Dave Ramsey says deliver pizza if you must.

you could go to the casino and sit at a poker table and wait for a big pair like PocketAces or something

I would think you could find work pretty easy. Do you have actual accounting experience?

Many temp agencies can but you to work quickly if you have a good track record and needed skill.

The competition for these jobs, even temp jobs in Chicago is insane. I worked a temp job unrelated to my education for a year (I'm moving from the area now), and there were countless people with over a decade of accounting experience who couldn't even land temp assignments.

I'd try and find anything I could ASAP, bartending or otherwise. You can still try and get an accounting/finance temp job, but the odds of finding one right away aren't that great as a 24-year-old.

Um, I'm a contractor/financial analyst in Chicago and it took 6 months to get hired and 7 to begin work. That is because I didn't live in the city and had to go through 3 different rounds of interviews. It's basically treated as a year long trial to move someone to full benefits.

Some of these temp agencies are the scum of the Earth too. My mom just lost her payroll analyst job after 15 years at a company. One of the agencies (Accounting Principals) found her an assignment. She got to the assignment and it turned out the agency had completely lied about her experience (claimed she had some payroll tax experience she didn't have) and the company sent her home right away.

Jobs are there if you are willing to do them. Crappy work is better than no work

Find every professional recruiter online and send them your resume, followed by a phone call of course. One thing I know about recruiters, if you stay on their arse they will make some calls for you. Previous work experience in that field would obviously make you a more desirable candidate. I was in the same boat but I work in healthcare IT.

The solution if possible to that is go to the source. The company I work for does all of the hiring of contractors itself. Once they've decided to hire someone is when they involve the employment agency to do the onboarding.

Shiftgig

Try Shiftgig. It's like Uber for Hospitality workers and more. You decide when you want to work. You can work as much as you want. We just started using them. I like it because it's all electronic and I can get who I want and ban workers we get that are terrible.

Robert Half is a headhunter for Accounting and Finance jobs. I would contact them and see what they have available. I've used them for my last two jobs.

Recruiter here; what want my advice? Avoid temp agencies, most of them are hella scummy and their recruiters are fresh out of school and just need to get you in a job to get a paycheck.

Edit: what area of the country are you in now?

Look into being a blood clean up person in the south side. I actually know someone that went into that but he was an idiot and failed.

I used to substitute teach when I first got into real estate and was in a pinch due to a bad month. I also sold merchant services as an independent agent for a year and did pretty well with it. Find some independent sales jobs and hustle. Between that, real estate, and subbing I did ok.
