So I can look through my 21 year old daughter (no pics) and my 18 year old son's (no pics) phone because I pay the bills. That's pretty creepy if you ask me.

If I am paying for it, it is not their phone. It is my phone.

I had a friend who went to a private high school that took everyone’s phones at the start of the day. He moved to a public highschool his junior year and failed some classes because he looked at his phones all day
Sounds like the private school had the right idea.

Yeah well is 2020 and a smartphone has basically become a required piece of equipment for everyone old enough to do the ABCs
Cough it up to the cost of merging penis with vagina.
Its almost to being your phone as much as the food you need to feed your kid is your food.

Sorry, but they did, my kids are grown and would be really surprised at the stuff they still think their mom and Ididnt know about, including checking emails and phones.

There are apps and even built in features to most popular email providers that tell you if someone is doing that now
You would have already been juked out if a kid was dropped in your lap right now.

Until you can have candid discussions with them. If you decide to give your 9 year old a phone, then by all means, look at that thing daily and keep the parental controls tight.
By the time you have a teenager, you need to be having daily reminder sessions with them about responsible phone/social media usage. If they don't want you to know what they're posting, you won't be able to find it anyway, so good luck with that.
Instead, go on the offensive. I preach to my kids daily about what they put online and who they're talking to. If a kid at school gets in trouble, I use it as a learning opportunity for mine. I think they truly don't understand how quickly someone can screen shot and share what they put out there. When another kid gets busted, I try to use it as a teachable moment.
Teach them about servers and subpoenas. Have frank conversations about the ramifications of hate speech in 2020, sexting, cyber bullying and all of the things they WILL deal with in their high school years. That being said, our kids do know that their phones belong to us, we pay the bills, and that we can look through them at any time.

I promise you they did not

Drugs, law issues, suicide worries...no age restrictions on looking through phones. Besides that, probably 18-21. Is you are paying and they are living in your house, it’s closer to 21.

If it's a boy who cares. If it's a girl until she's married.

They living (free) under my roof?
If I'm paying the phone bill, that makes it MY phone. So, how old is too old to look thru my own phone?

Yeah I think any age is fair as long as you let them know you reserve the right to look through their phone
It’s fricked up if you do it behind their back
