This weekend I went through my clothes and cleaned out my closet and I forgot about half the shite I had in there. It has been years since I have gone through everything. I learned one thing, we acquire a lot of bullshite we really don't need.

For myself, I try to do it at least once a year. My problem is that when I do purge, I get nostalgic or tell myself I’ll wear something that I haven’t worn in over a year or two. I try to stick to the rule that if I haven’t worn it in a year or more, it probably needs to go.

For the kids? I have to do that every 3-6 months because they’re at the stage where they’re growing out of stuff that fast. Especially the baby. In fact, I just cleaned out hers this weekend, and plan to work on my sons today. Not fun but it is gratifying when stuff is more organized and you know what they’ve got and where it’s at.

Side conversation: I have TONS of t shirts like that from HS sports and music, and great stuff from Tigerband with all of our bowl games and championships. Of course you’re likely never to wear it again but you don’t want to just throw them out. My neighbor had a quilt made out of all her special/important t shirts from those years. It’s a pretty cool idea—lots of people offer the service through Etsy, and you’re more likely to see or display/use the quilt.

My wife (no pics) and I just did this since we moved 4 years ago. You are right on the money about accumulating a lot of junk.

Filled like three garbage bags full of clothes and shoes to get rid of.

Not often enough. At last count, I think I have about sixty short sleeved tops and probably thirty pairs of socks. Ridiculous!!!

I had other items in my closet (travel bags, hats, etc) and one several occasions I would see something and think "Oh yeah! I forgot about this. I am going to keep it" then I had to tell myself "if I didn't know it was there until now.. Do I really need to keep it?" Then a bunch of those things went to road with the garbage... And I think most of it was picked up people who were passing by. That's another thing, it's amazing what people will pick up on side the road.

Do you ever forget you have certain types of clothes and end up buying something just like it? I had several clothes that were similar and I was trying to figure out "why did I buy this if I already had that?".

I'm a stickler for the backwards hanger trick and cleaning out anything still backwards each season. Another helpful thing is that I always have a laundry basket in the guest room to collect items I want to donate throughout the year.

Where do you donate your clothes? I have a few garbage bags full of clothes and I plan on bringing them to Brother's Keeper. I assume they are a good place to bring them.

I live in FL and don't remember much about places in LA. If you want to just get rid of stuff, Goodwill. If you're trying to make an impact, cull out the better stuff and find a charity that is doing things you want to support.

I have high school baseball shirts from the early 2000s. I also still have a jacket like this from my brothers drunken road trip to Mexico that is probably 20 years old.

Was in the den drinking coffee one morning and I hear this thump coming from our bedroom. I get up look in the bedroom, nothing unusual. Go get dressed and the top bar in the closet had come loose from the drywall because of the weight of the clothes. Must of taken 50lbs of clothes to the local shelter.
