We moved to an older, established part of Algiers for all of the reasons in the OP plus my wife and I both work on the Wank and we're in the same neighborhood with some other family members. The only thing that wasn't a factor was the school system because I'm never going to send my kid to Karr. Private school is just going to be like an electric bill to us. It's just a necessity.

You will get a lot of naysayers but what it comes down to is you can do it if you really want to be in New Orleans. You can live relatively safely in Mid City or Lakeview, get a comfortable enough house, and send your 2-3 kids to a good public charter like Hynes or one of the International schools or send to Catholic school; for $100,000 or so a year salary. I know people who do it for less.

Live in Metry, 5-10 minutes from downtown, depending on the traffic... in a 4 bedroom 2.5 bath house.. Wife and I earn over 120 a year, kids go to catholic school.. I wouldn't say we live from paycheck to paycheck; however, some of our play money gets used up...

I don't know about Lakeview. A 4br house there is going to be a nice chunk of change. A quick search on realtor shows 1 house available with 4br for under $300k. It's listed at $279k.

Yeah, that's going to be you living in Mandeville or Covington.

Or St Charles parish. That's about the only options.

You get a lot of bang for your buck in Algiers, best deals in the city in the Tall Timbers and Bocage areas.

You can get some serious house for your money in Tall Timbers but that public school in there and the fact that it passes through to Tullis is a big turnoff. Bocage is nice and they are undergoing a full street makeover there right now so that will not longer be an issue. We moved to Park Timbers for many reasons but we were never going to find the kind of house we did in an established, safe neighborhood in the actual city for the price we paid.

What's the going salary for living in that kind of spot?

For all that, I'd want at least $120k a year.

I'd start scouting schools first and decide from there. You can save a lot by applying to some of the charter schools. Here's a good one if you get lucky enough to get in.

LINK /

You can find affordable good housing essentially anywhere within 30 minutes of the city in every direction. You can make less than 80k a year and live very comfortably in New Orleans. I'd say less but this is the OT.

Don't raise your kids in New Orleans unless you're prepared to spend at least 1/3-1/4th of your tuition on private school.

You know people with 2-3 kids in private school living in Lakeview on less than $100k gross a year?

Uptown New Orleans you'd probably need to make about 200k+ if you want a house that big and pay for private school for 3 kids. Probably at least 150k if you want to live in New Orleans proper and have a house that size, while sending 3 kids to private school.

The numbers I'm seeing are no where near as high as I expected. Uptown looked like you'd need to be a millionaire to afford it.

This thread is an anomaly. Usually you ask this "how much money do I need to make to live ________" and everyone tells you $500k or something more ridiculous.

I mean, it all depends on how you're willing to live. You could easily get into A HOUSE Uptown but it would be half of a shotgun double or some really small rundown property. BUT you would be Uptown.

Well, I was actually looking in the Irish channel area bordering Uptown. You aren't going to get prime uptown location for less than 700k or so at that size of house.

3 kids and 4/2?

I'd say $150k to live comfortably in a suburb. Any less and you are gonna have to think about smaller purchases
