How much would I need to make per year to live comfortably in New Orleans?

Just spent a few days in New Orleans. I was born there but moved when I was 11. It's still my favorite city in the world.

I was curious though how much one would need to actually live in New Orleans. The following would be preferred:

4 bedroom, 2+ bath house with office space

Easy driving distance to the city (say no more than 30 minutes) and still in an area with fun stuff to do

Good school system (perhaps private schools?)

Safe area

What's the going salary for living in that kind of spot? Where would that spot be?

Yeah, that's going to be you living in Mandeville or Covington.

Or Lakeview which is bout 8 minutes from downtown. Or Old Metairie which is about the same.

The standard OT Baller has a weekend/Mardi-Gras pad on St. Charles that they stay in when not on their compound on the Diversion Canal.

Their weekend getaway from the place on St. Charles is a 2,000 SFLA little number in the French Quarter or somewhere in Faubourg Marigny so they don't have to Uber or street-car it back to their place on St. Charles.

So all in all I'd say 2-3 million (USD)/year for this type of set-up in NOLA.

You can live within NOLA area, make less than $100k as a family and still live in a 2,000 sqft house and send your kids to private school (or magnets if you hit the lottery- they have lotteries for admission).

The 4 bedroom house thing is going to narrow down your choices really. I guess the Northshore would check off most of your boxes. Parts of Metairie and Algiers would fit your criteria too. To live in any decent area of any of the above places and be comfortable it would probably take a household income north of $80-$90K.

eta: You said 3 kids? Better bump that income up to over $120k.

This house is a solid half milion at best in Orleans Parish I'd imagine

She does now. Prefers not to once our 2nd is born.

But she can work.

Honestly, this thread isn't really a "I'm moving to New Orleans, please help." More of a curiosity thing.

I doubt we'd ever make the coin to live in Uptown or anything like that.

That's a pretty large house. Would have to be Metairie, Kenner, Lakeview, Gentilly, Northshore, most likely.

A house of that size in Metairie would probably be at least 350-400 I would think. Lakeview a bit more. Gentilly less.

Good school system? Lol. They would need to go to Catholic Schools or other private schools.

You could in a really small, needs renovating type place. The 4 bedrooms that you can afford is what is going to be hard to come up in that area.

3 kids in private shools in New Orleans are going to cost him anywhere between $25k-$65k a year depending on which schools

Yeah. I think Jesuit is still one of the cheapest at around $8K per year but it's hard to get in these days. They just go up from there.

Was. Could be again once I finish grad school next year.

Again, this is a curiosity thread. There's no plan to move to New Orleans. Yet.
