I had tops so it wasn’t much. I can’t imagine how much it’ll be when my kids are in school. I’ve been putting in the states max into each of their 529 accounts since they were born. I’m hoping with ~5% growth each year it might be enough when the first one is there in 13 years.

Fall of ‘81 I wrote my first tuition check for $325 at LSU. I could work between fall and spring semesters at a minimum wage job and earn enough to pay for the spring semester.

But did you have a lazy river or a Chief Diversity Officer?

$110. per semester at LSU. Yeah, I'm old.
If I could make $1500 during the summer, I could pay for the entire next year. Living in Pentagon, eating in the cafeteria and a minimal number of high maintenance girlfriends.
But as minimum wage in those days was $1.65/hr, I often depended on my POPS scholarship...

$1,800 a semester for full time (12+ hours) at UT. I was there 2000 - 2005.
I believe it’s just shy of $7,000 a semester now for Tennessee residents.

Same. I remember it being a little over $3k per semester because TOPS paid $1500 and dad paid the other $1500.
He would hand me a physical check to go turn in to the bursar office.

I went to MSU and did undergrad from 2005-2009. Courses were about $1,500/semester or $100/hour. By the time I finished my Master's it was up to $133/hour. Freshmen only were required to live on campus. In 2005-06, it was $1,580/semester for the dorms. I did not have a meal plan.

I have a friend who went to Southeastern from ‘71-‘74.
He still has the cancelled check mounted under glass from his last semester there.
$141.50 total for in-state tuition there for the Spring ‘74 Semester.
Books were included at SELA and if you lived in Bogalusa or Slidell or Kentwood there was a free bus that ran to & from the SELA campus every day. The bus drivers were generally students and they got their tuition free and a stipend for driving five days a week.

I think that my first semester at USL in ‘78 was around $130. Textbooks were ridiculously expensive, even back then. My dad got pissed when I didn’t ask him for a check for tuition (I worked and paid for it myself). He explained that he was still listing me as a dependent.
By the way, rent at my fraternity house was $50 a room per month. We’d put two to a room, so $25 a month rent.
