How much stock do you put in Yelp reviews?

Just curious. They only real negative ones I see seem to be made by those who just like to complain or have expectations far beyond required service.

Positive ones are prob from the business owners friends and family. I doubt many logical people put forth time and effort to play on the internet reviewing every service they receive.

What you think about this OT?

Don't trust reviews. Complainers complain, and many review sites can be paid to boost reviews.

Depends.

If I see a place average 4.5 stars on like 600 reviews, then you can safely assume that the place is worthy of 4.5 stars.

ETA: But I typically only use Google for reviews.

Zero. I will use google reviews at times. You can pick up a pattern if a place really sucks.

On Amazon, I generally trust the one star ones to be accurate, if they are insightful and/or numerous.

Yelp can be a lot of friend and family type cheerleader reviews that you have to discount, for sure.

Amazon, I read the reviews. Yelp not at all. Zero trust in Yelp outside of picking a nearby restaurant and even then I don’t read the reviews.
Yelp is a scam.

It depends on the tenor of the review for me.
Just like on the Food and Drink Board.

Hyperbole is off putting.

"Food was indebible"
"Waited half and hour for our drinks"

Most of that sort of stuff is b.s.

Edit: If there are hundreds of reviews and 90% are 4 and 5, I trust the overall. Same with the other side.

Individual reviewers not so much.

I trust them to determine if something is bad, not necessarily good, though. If that makes sense. For instance, I'm not going somewhere that is a 2 star, but I'm also not automatically trusting that somewhere is good if it's 4+.

IF, and it’s a big if, you bother to check the reviewer you can quickly tell if it is real or not. Reviewer who only gives one great review? Owner or employee of the place. All negative reviews? Someone who is a troll and doesn’t like anything. Tons of positive reviews? Paid individual or company.

Multiple reviews talking about the food and service with varying ratings? Someone who is into food and eating out and likes the app. Listen to that person.

But that is a lot of work just to pick a place. When Yelp started it was legit but it has been co-opted by people who have learned to game the system and the app owners extorting restaurants for high ratings.

I usually don't. The photography stuff I buy, the one stars are so unrealistic. It's usually stuff that the average user wouldn't be bothered by. They'll bash an entire system based on something like battery life.

Review sites are like call centers. Nobody will tell you when things are working well, but they sure raise hell when something isn't right.

Positive reviews I generally question their genuineness.

Yeah but who's reviewing the reviewers of the reviews? That's the key question here

I had an ex that reviewed every place she'd go (until we got serious). I'll add either really good, or really bad reviews to Google. Medium-level service doesn't get a review.

I review 90% of stuff on Amazon

I only somewhat believe reviews that have over several hundred entrants

My favorites are the ones where some $20 product only lasts a few years.

I saw one for shampoo the other day. This woman gave it three stars because the 8oz bottle didn't last as long as it should've. She liked the shampoo though

Almost every time I buy something on Amazon, I get offered a discount or product sample to leave a review.

Zero.
In fact, I hate Yelp. Always among the first hits if I google something like a restaurant. I would so rather get the restaurant up first and not wade through Yelp and copycats.
