How much preventative maintenance do you do on your vehicles?

Say +80k miles...want to keep the vehicle for a long time and have it perform perfectly.

Fluids, spark plugs, belts, hoses, battery, inspect bushings...what about more expensive items like a water pump?

Keep the fluids changed, keep it tuned right, grease it, I don't go changing out parts that work ie: water pump

Replacing a water pump isn't preventive maintenance.

I change fluids regularly, rotate and balance tires every 5k , keep it clean and if something breaks I fix it. I own all of my vehicles, not lease and I like to keep them as long as I can. I'm not a fan of a car note.

Follow the maintenance schedule in your owners manual.

Never and I mean never have your transmission flushed.

The manual says the fluid in the transmission is 'lifetime' fluid. I don't understand that logic though. My Indy has balked every time I mention changing it.

Oil changing when the manual says, not every 3000 miles.
Brakes when starting to squeal.
That's about it.

Oh, and change out my hanging Christmas tree air freshener.

Newer cars do not need transmission flush. It can actually damage transmission. They need full transmission service only at manufacturer recommended intervals.

That actually goes with everything on newer cars. Follow recommended intervals in owners manual. Do not believe the salesman at the shop.

Transfer case and diffs every 50k, Transmission every 75k, coolant at 50k, and plugs at a 100k.

It might seem a little over kill but I have 300k on a Land Cruiser and haven't had a problem yet.

+1

Why frick with something that's in perfectly working order? I never understood the need for this and constantly hear it causing major problems shortly after. I would think the same would go for the "engine flush" the offer.

on your Tacoma?

Less is more.

Battery every 4-5 years

check the U-joints for wear every 2-4 years

check seals for leaks every oil change

Inspect hoses and belts, but they last for 150k+ miles.

Inspect bushings, lube ball joints and other joints if they have valves on them.

rotate tires every oil change (7500 miles)

I used to pull my engines and do a top rebuild at 100k mile intervals. I probably won't do that with the TACO. At 170k the engine bay and fluids look new.

Though I am a fan of flushing the brake fluid every four years as well as the radiator.

I check under the hood about once a week. Inspect fluid levels every 1000 miles. Get under the truck and inspect everything twice a year. Change all fluids and filters at regular intervals. Load test battery and charging system every Fall. Test and charge AC refrigerant every Spring.

Who's lifetime, yours or the transmissions? There's no such thing as a transmission that doesn't need regular fluid changes, the active additives in ATF is depleted over time. You shouldn't flush an automatic transmission but you should definitely drain and refill on a somewhat regular basis if you plan on keeping the vehicle for a long time.
