Nice Chart, Alaska is fricked.
I bet Louisiana economy breaks down like so:
O&G 9%
Tourism 25%
LSU Football 50%
Movies 25%
Duck Dynasty 10% (the only thing north Louisiana brings to the table)

Job multiplier is 4.4 - for every job created in O&G, 3.4 additional jobs are created in other sectors of the state.
That is a telling statistic. We depend heavily on O&G even if it is only 10-15% of the overall economy.

Houma is obviously not 100%. I mean, if that's the case, no doctor, store owner, etc. makes a dime. But, I would say 80% of Houma's economy in it's current form exists because of oil. Before that it was Sugar Cane and Seafood. And it was a MUCH smaller town.

That's what people forget. Many service industry jobs rely on O&G

I would love to see the Travel and Expense costs paid on entertainment, travel, customer trips, etc. that O&G companies spend in LA every year. I would think it would be an amazing number.

Curious how many posting in this thread were working for a living in south louisiana during the 1980's

No. Probably about 15%
So you wouldn't consider the refineries part of the economy?

I definitely remember growing up in the 80's oil crash. My dad told me stories of people just mailing the keys to their house to the bank. The company my family owned went from 400 employees to 70 in a matter of two years. But just think of all those poor girls at twin peaks that will be unemployed due to the cuts in O&G expense accounts

Almost every company I know around here is having to go through budget cuts in one form or another. Only company I know that isn't is my parent's company, and that's because they only deal with the wealthy and very wealthy

I would say Lafayette and surrounding parished it's about 60/40 in favor or O&G. Lafyatte has a lot of healthcare, but overall its majority petroleum.
