There has been a positive trend towards more skimpy bikinis for several years now. It started with the "cheeky" victoria secret bikinis, then went to the "brazilian cut" bikinis, and has not trended towards straight up thongs, even on beaches and public pools. It's still certainly not a majority or even a large percentage, but you will see thong bikini bottoms in Orange Beach, Destin, PCB, etc. You'll see even more at Crab Island.

Because it's built into us to see curves as a sign of fertility. Your ancestors saw the bigger curves, the better. That's probably still lurking in our firmware. Only in the 20 and 21st centuries have we seen skinnier girls as more attractive. Everyone from the Mesopotamians through Renaissance Europeans saw big-hipped girls as the way to go. Look at the paintings by Raphael, Titian, Donatello, etc... all the women were plump with big, roomy hips.

In our brains: baby-birthin' hips.
