Looking forward to a great season.
Aspen: Dec. 9-14 (with my 9 year old son)
Vail: Jan 25-30 (solo)
Deer Valley: Jan 31-Feb 7 (entire family)
Big Sky: Feb 27-Mar 4 (with my 9 year old daughter)
Will be my first time to Vail and Big Sky, so looking forward to checking out somewhere new. Always love Aspen, and went to Deer Valley for the first time last year and loved it.
Thinking of adding in a short family trip over New Years to either Bachelor or Schwitzer...any recommendations between the two for that time of year?

Meatpacking District NYC - Restaurants
Posted by Herecomethehawks on 7/24/25 at 3:15 pm
Will be in NYC for a couple nights with my wife in September. Staying in Meatpacking district. Anyone have any restaurant recommendations for a nice date night in Meatpacking or an adjacent neighborhood? At at Pastis last time we were there and it was good, but want to try something new. Thanks in advance!

The stew pot in Snowmass (very close to view line). Causal spot. The habanero pork stew is amazing.
il poggio is good Italian, also very close walk.
French alpine bistro in Aspen is another good spot. Roughly 30min bus ride into town from Snowmass

We love tubing. Was looking at Woodward tubing website…almost $200 for the two of us. I don’t mind spending money, but that seems nuts for tubing

Any recommendations for fun things to do in the evenings after skiing deer valley with a 9 year old? Looking at maybe the ice castle in Midway.
Also, any thoughts on renting a car? Looks like I would need one if we do the ice castle. Our flight home departs at 6am, so might be better to have a car instead of relying on a shuttle? Appreciate any input

Sitting in the lobby of the Standard Highline waiting for our room to be ready. 3.5hrs after it was going to be ready in 30 minutes still isn’t ready. So far I wouldn’t recommend here. Will update if my opinion changes
Edit: the room, view, and location are great. Customer service…a little lacking, but they did let us have a really late checkout to make up for the delayed check in

re: Iowa City - Just wondering if any of you baws have lived there or spent time there.

It is safe, decent options for arts/theater. Cost of living is relatively low. Lots of nice local restaurants. If you have specific questions let me know. Also the post above that said Chicago is a 5 hour drive is way off. I can be from Iowa city to being parked in downtown Chicago right about 3.5hrs

The air show is August 10-11. Always fun to watch from Oak St Beach or North Ave Beach. They will do a practice show Friday the 9th

Udvar-Hazy Air and Space out at Dulles is awesome. They have the Discovery space shuttle, a Concorde, SR-71, and a ton of other awesome stuff

I get the excitement of renting a "fun" car, but with the narrow roads and tight parking we always go for something older with dings and dents in it already. I don't think I've had a trip without some minor car damage and have never been charged for it, where with the newer "fun" cars you will for sure be charged for any ding or scratch. Also, you don't want a big car. We find the Suzuki Vitara on Jimny to be about right for a family of 4. Recommend Gumbs car rental to anyone going to SBH. Family run business, and Odile is fantastic to work with.

Absolutely worth the visit. Fly in from sxm (st Barts commuter or Winair) or from sju (tradewind). We always get a villa, but hotels are nice too. You need a car (gumbs car rental).
If you have any more specific questions would be happy to answer. We are there pretty frequently.

re: Roth IRA and UTMA for younger kids

They (twins) have been featured in regional tv and print advertisements for the past 4 or 5 years, so that’s where they generate their income. We have been able to contribute the maximum to their Roth IRAs
We have always used a financial planner/advisor for everything, but feel like maybe we aren’t seeing much benefit for the fees they charge ( don’t even really what the fees are). We have a fair amount invested, just never been in charge of it, so not very knowledgeable.
Appreciate any and all advice.

Wanting to get away from the fees associated with the financial planner. I assume he isn’t providing much if any benefit to us.

Roth IRA and UTMA for younger kids
Posted by Herecomethehawks on 7/12/24 at 5:30 am
Currently have Roth IRA and utma for my kids through American funds. Looking to move them to vanguard. Would VOO and VUG be good selections for them, so should I look for something else? About 45k in the Roth and 45k in the utma currently

If you are booked all the way on the same ticket there is no need to collect bags at LHR. They will go to your final destination.

Lodging, lift tickets, lessons are all probably 1/2 the price of major US resorts.

Love Chamonix. Skied there last year end of January and didn’t have great snow, pretty icy. Spent two days at Grands Montets, one of which we toured over the ridge to the glacier. Did Vallee Blanche, and spent a day at Brevent/Flegere. Had a great time. This year taking my wife and 9 year old twins. Will probably stick to Le Tour, and Brevent/Felegre.
My wife is most excited for the food. We were there as a family last summer and she was a little jealous that I got to go back in the winter and enjoy the food without them

Snowmass is great. Longshot run is always a favorite. Powerline glades and sneakys glads are fun. Can’t really go wrong with any of the runs. There are so many great runs for all abilities. We always enjoy venga venga for Mexican food. Stew pot is good/easy. I’ll Poggio for good Italian. So many options for a good meal.
