What do welders generally make per hour?

Depends on what they weld and where.

And what would their jobs typically consist of?

Nailing pieces of wood together.

Re the AL welding, if eyesight damage is a problem, design and patent a camera system (comparable to surgery by remote view) so that the light rays damage the camera all you see is a transmitted image?

The real money for trades such as a welder is in Overtime hours. It not unusual for one of my guy's to have 40 regular and 30-50 OT per week.

6. Probably 7 soon as I have a test scheduled in a couple of weeks that I know I'll pass.

Passed the Shell test recently and got referred by a good friend of mine. He asks me if I ever got contacted for an interview and I tell him no. He asks a guy who he referred me to why and he tells him they want either 5 years of operator experience or a PTEC. 0% chance you get an interview without either regardless of test performance.

It's very frustrating. So I need to kick shite in gear and go grab a degree or something. Just disconcerting to know my B.S. means jack shite and I need some simpleton PTEC degree to be worthy of working in one of these facilities.

Out top welders make $23.50 an hour. Thats in a yard with benefits. Contract welders make $32-40 mostly with no benefits. Shipyard welders may be in the bottom of a double bottom gouging out a weld in a shite tank. Contract maintenance welder in a plant may make 1 weld a month and get paid to play pedro thr rest of the time.

Ha. Truth.

Our guys in the Fab yard top out at either $23.40 or $24.40. We give an extra buck if you can hit some different alloys.

I've hired a few for offshore here later at $28 if the can TIG and Fit pipe. If they can't fit, then it's 24-$26.

If it's just a SMAW guy, then he's making $21-$22.

I regards to the PTEC degree...it is near impossible to break into production right now unless you know someone. You would likely have to start as a rigger/roustabout somewhere and hope to work your way up.

Chedballz- I assume you work for GIF?

This. The more materials you can weld the more $$$ you make.

Most schools offering PTECH degrees now have an accelerated degree program if you have a BS. It may take you 3 mos to get it but yes it will open doors. I think with your experience and BS you will eventually get hired nonetheless, it may just take time. If you can get the degree within the next year you may have a shot at that Shell job.

In the TX/LA area the turnaround and project welders are making $34 to $43. If you are good you can get that high rate and make double that for all over time. Then add $100 to $125 a day per diem.
It's a good time for those guys and pipe fitters. There will be plenty of work in the next two years for sure to keep everyone busy

Welding is like anything else. If you can do basic welding and work in a fab shop, probably 12-18 an hour. Those jobs aren't much in demand.

The more materials and setups you can weld/use, the more certifications you get, the more you can make. If you have your own rig, you are looking at a lot of money.

Look into NDE and inspection field. Endless opportunities and easy to get into. Go take a 40 hour radiation safety class and then start applying to companies. Eventually you can go take your API and be an inspector. The sky is the limit from there. Better money and better career than a welder.

LOL
There are a shite load of guys that love that. Are you kidding me? Of course it's not all the time, but they love going to a 4-6 week or longer job and work 12 hours a day with every 13th day off. Do the math. It's damn good pay for those who are good at what they do and motivated.
Of course they are the cream of the crop and can pass background and drug checks
