This is the way to do it. I can’t imagine paying for someone that I don’t know to be next to me in a huge life milestone.

Ah, I'm guessing in South Carolina?

Notaries cannot perform weddings in most states unless they are otherwise qualified to perform weddings (ordained or whatever other certification the law allows for).

Yeah only like 5 or 6 states allow notaries to perform weddings. In the south, I think SC, TN, and FL allow it.

Its pretty convenient. Not sure why it isn't that way in all states. All you're doing is reading a script and recording signatures and sending the paperwork to the county.

I performed my brothers. In Ak, you can get anyone to do it with proper notice.

Years ago I became an ordained minister. It took like 3 mins and $5. I would have to pay to get a certificate to register with the clerk of court, but you can just get someone to sign up here:

United National Ministry

So I wouldn't pay much if I was in need. I'd get them a gift or something. Or get a justice of the peace, but to answer the question I wouldn't pay that much unless I was somewhere I didn't know anyone but I guess no more than $100?

Can't remember how much I gave the preacher the first wedding but I gave him $50 for the second one fifteen years later and told him he better get it right this time.

Thinking about this, it really does seem like it would make sense.

Really, properly filling out and submitting the paperwork, which a notary is specifically trained to deal with, is the part that legally gets you married. The rest of it is for reasons other than legality.

I have never "charged" anyone as a pastor. I just think it is part of my service to our church and I do not nor ever will make someone pay me for marrying two people.

However, someone in the family will give me a thank you card with some money in it, and it is normally between $100 and $150.
