I always had the bare minimum but then my buddy who used to work at insurance told me he has 500k medical liability coverage. God damn is this the norm? I pay 1200 a year

Bare minimum to be legal since 2002 More of a reason to pay cash for vehicles.
Never have made a claim. No accidents.

Depends on your assets.. if you’re in an accident and don’t have enough to cover the loss and that person has Uninsured/underinsured insurance and they file against it. When their insurance company pays out the UM coverage they(the insurance company)can come after to to indemnify that loss..

If he gets in a serious accident that 500k won't last long.
I was severely injured in a crash 30 years ago and USAA payed out millions for my medical bills.

500/500
2M/2M umbrella.
Figure anything I would be liable for would settle for under 2.5M

WTF? All you "bare minimum" guys are on crack.
You're all a split, inattentive, second away from loosing almost everything in a bankruptcy. PI Lawyers these days are more and more pursuing individuals personal assets and garnishing wage checks for damages over their coverage limits.

That’s 2.5M in UM as well. You would be a fool not to have UM in this State. My agent said maybe up to 70% don’t have liability or minimal.

You could self insure with a bond and not have to pay any insurance.
I would advise against that. Cost of defense.

I have 500k because I own my home.

Your agent who is paid commissions lied to you and told you 70% of Louisiana drivers don't have liability insurance to convince you to buy additional UM coverage? That is five times the actual reported number of uninsured and double the percent of underinsured.
Also, if you have health insurance what is the point of all the UM coverage? It only helps you if they are un/underinsured to pay for your medical bills which will be covered if you have health insurance.
