Per Google.... Currently, there are 36 seven-footers in the NBA, out of 390 on active rosters. That's about 11 percent.

I didn’t major in math or anything...but I’m pretty sure that’s not correct

Okay, so ratio that for the rest of society; that’s 330,000,000 times 0.11 = 36.3 million in the USA!

My basic search on Google suggests a world average of 1.6 million below seven feet in height for every one person seven feet or taller. If the 330 million number for the US population is used an educated guess suggests there are 206 people that are 7 feet or taller. Some other guesstimates have the ratio around 2-4 million, which would put the number of people seven feet or tall between 82 and 165.

A Houston rocket player back in the 1980’s moved into my aunt and uncle’s neighborhood. The dude’s house had front doors that were 9 feet in height. The home itself was like 7k sq feet

And there are probably another 70 that are 6'10- 6"11".

It must suck and inconvenient being that tall since society is built and made to accommodate people with average height.

Probably more than 100.

My grandpa was 6'7" ... and he was the shortest of his brothers. There were four boys. Great Uncle Lou was easily over 7 feet. I never met him, but he looks like a freak in the old pics.

It's gotta be more than 206 persons.

At my wife's graduation ceremony at a S. Florida university about 10 years ago, I walked by a student (I'm sure that he was the team's basketball player) who was about 7'-2 or 7'-3". I never felt so short in my life (I'm 5'-11") and walking by next to him was pretty intimidating. It felt odd, freakish. I can't imagine a person that tall having to stay at a hotel with a standard bed.

Not to mention trying to find a car that would be somewhat comfortable to drive. I would hate to be that tall.

I have no idea but will guess 121 without shoes based on comments and analysis in this thread.

My favorite hobby is basketball and will also guess that I could beat 61 of them in 1 on 1 (full court if possible). If someone can get that challenge coordinated, much appreciated.

LSU people from the mid to late 90s...there was a white student who was over 7feet and maybe close to 7 foot 2. He hung around the Varsity and I’d even see him in Allen Hall. Tallest dude who never played ball I ever saw. No, this wasn’t Tuba.

You’re talking about my boy Nick. 7’1” and worked at the Caterie a few years.

That’s one year of rosters. Now go back 30-40 years for all the prior rosters and players that are still alive. Also, because of the evolution of the game to being a perimeter style the NBA has never been shorter. Just because there are fewer NBA seven footers doesn’t mean that is a good representation of how many there are in the population.

My original question limited the number to only people currently living in the US. By far the highest concentration should be involved in basketball (pro or college), but beyond that I don't expect too many to move to the US for another profession.

And some posters think the US alone has roughly 1/3 of that population.
