I saw in the other thread that many seem to do it. I’m a working adult with a bachelors, planning to do an MBA in a year or so. My parents didn’t pay a nickel for my college education.

By the time kids enter college, they’re adults. Shouldn’t they be paying their own way?

If they’re smart, they can get scholarships. If they need loans but pursue a good STEM field; they can pay it off reasonably quick. Or they can do what I and many others do and join the military and get them to pay it later.

Kind of hard to teach self reliance if you’re going to be carrying them into adulthood in my opinion.

Been contributing to a 529 plan for years. Don't want mine paying student loans for a decade like I did.

I'll probably help mine out. Hopefully tops will be around in some form in 6 years.

We only have one kid and my wife and I can afford to help her. I'm not paying for an apartment or dorm though. She can live at home or pay for it herself.

Also kind of hard for your kid to have a decent life if they are an SUV purchase level amount of student debt.

I look at it as an extension of the way things used to be. Instead of fathers teaching sons how to be a Smith or sending them to another Smith (while usually paying a little cash) they are spending the money instead of time to have their child taught.

If I can afford it, yes I'll pay for college. I feel like you started this thread just so you could post this

I find it comical that the parents who are now saying it's about self reliance are the ones who voted in politicians who themselves voted on policies that have skyrocketed the price of an education.

If I can afford it without taking out a loan and/or impacting my retirement, I will.

If I can’t afford it without financial stress, nope.

Mine didn’t, I found a way.

Yeah I wouldn't say that many others do this.

Sure you can. My parents paid all they could towards my education, including private high school and I was a licensed CPA before my 25th birthday and used over 25% of my salary to either service debt or save my first year working.

Lots of parents who will be paying for their kids college and everything else will be the same parents who will allow their kids to move back home and live in their basements or the like.

If you're in a position to do so then I see no reason not to. With TOPS, scholarships, and stipend, you are mainly paying room and board (assuming top grades). My son will not have that but I will still pay so long as he works hard and does well. And I don't want my kids leaving college with loans. Grad school is on them, but my daughter is majoring in something in the medical filed so hopefully she'll be able to pay those off in a reasonable amount of time. I'll probably contribute whatever I'm paying now towards grad school as well and look forward to my "raise" four years or so after that.

Set up the 529 when they were born. I'm not going to let them start life at a disadvantage.

I paid my way through college and law school and although I think it had a positive impact on me, I will help my kids. What is crazy, is that my kids got the second best scholarship (on top of Tops) that LSU gives and it still costs 4-5k for room and board to attend. Both of my kids could have gone to Ole Miss or Alabama and been paid a stipend to go (with tuition, room and board fully paid), but because of TOPS, LSU does not have a large number of high end scholarships. If you child is real smart, it is cheaper on you to send them out of state than to keep them at home at LSU. I chose to pay more, so that they could attend mom and dad's university

Why is it at that at the mystical age of 18 a parent has to completely shut their kid off from any financial assistance? My kids will have to work in college because I'm not footing the bill for things like food and beer, but I'll certainly assist them in getting a good education.

The idea that it has to be something that have a good return is dumb too. I know plenty of people that got a good degree and don't use it.

It may seem crazy, but I'd like to pay for a portion of a down payment on a house and their wedding if they are great kids too.

Is this where I apologize for being financially successful and responsible?
