Lots of parents who will be paying for their kids college and everything else will be the same parents who will allow their kids to move back home and live in their basements or the like.
This may be difficult for you to understand but there is an entire segment of the population out there that lives what would be considered an upper-middle class lifestyle. These people usually pay for all of their children's stuff.
Their children also usually end up in the upper-middle class as adults.

I plan on it, but we are trying to budget for at least $300k+ for each kid

Why is it at that at the mystical age of 18 a parent has to completely shut their kid off from any financial assistance?
Has anyone actually made this argument?

Of course I do.
It’s the end of their training to be productive adults.

I'm paying my kids.
My recommendation is to set up a 529 for your kids ASAP.
Pump in a few hundred a month for a few years.
Less than a car payment, but it will pay off for your finances come enrollment time.
I did a 529, but I didn't put away enough for the total, so I do regret not putting in more than I did.

From OP:

By the time kids enter college, they’re adults. Shouldn’t they be paying their own way?

I guess the way you worded it just seemed like taking it further. I dunno. Obviously I don't disagree with the majority of your post.

Well part of my point is that kids are different, unless you have multiple kids it is hard to understand that you can be the same parent and have kids turn out different.
I say this, because some kids are financially responsible at 16 and some may not be until they are older. Its not all on parenting, some of it is personality.
Just because we as an American society label someone as an adult at 18, does not mean that everyone is responsible enough to know exactly what degree and career they want to choose for the rest of their life.

Don't have to tell me

Kind of hard to teach self reliance if you’re going to be carrying them into adulthood in my opinion.

I'm also gonna have a say in their college / degree plan. I'm not paying 30k a year to get basics. And I'm not paying for a useless degree. If your job doesn't pay more than your degree cost I'm not paying for it.

For being a bunch of ballers on here y’all are some poor frickers

That's crazy, college isn't Vo-Tec. A degree should set you up for a lifetime of success, not one job.
Hell yes.

Yes. Just sent out $15k and some change for the fall semester.

Let me rephrase, will you parents be dumping out tens of thousands for your kid to get a degree in English or Gender Studies?
Posted on 8/13/18 at 1:53 pm to Parmen
I'll let my son study whatever he wants. I want him to do well in whatever he decides to study, but I'll support him even if he doesn't. I'm not giving up on him, and I'll help him all I can in the transition from childhood to adult.
I hope he says frick it dad, I want to be a punk musician.
