How many of you owned a Ford F-150 or Expedition with the 3V 5.4L V8?

For those of you with any experience with these motors, do you regret buying one?

Youtube - This mechanic thinks it's the worst engine ever made.

Curious if the Ford guys think it was even worse than the Ecoboost motors. I think it was.

had an 07. once i spent the $1200 getting the spark plugs changes that snapped in half, it was a solid engine, albeit not the most efficient

The Ford people I know say it is one of the most reliable engines Ford ever made. But you definitely need to change the plugs on the recommended intervals or they break off pieces into the cylinder.

Had a couple of Expeditions with the 5.4. Never had any trouble out of the engine.

I had a 302 2V in a '73 Mustang.

Once I got the smog pump off of it, it was gtg.

I had a 3.8l in a '85 Thunderchicken.

Both gave me good service. (like Mrs goofball)

Next question?

I did and traded it in for a Chevy when it started making a noise that sounded like a diesel. The ol' cam phasers got me!

5.4 Cam Phaser sound

I think that's what was in my 99 Expedition.

I got 270k miles out of that engine with few problems. It was still running fine when I sold it, but the transmission was getting ready to go.

We also had an 03 Expedition for a while. Also a fairly solid engine with few problems. We got rid of it at 210k miles.

From what I understand the variable timing crap is the cause of most of the problems. Trying to make motors more complex is sometimes not the best solution.

The 5.4 and 4.6 two valve engine are excellent engines. The 5.4 went to shite in 2004 when they changed the heads to 3 valves and added variable timing/cam phasers. The 5.4 starting in 2004 is crap shoot. May run 300k with no problems and may need a $2-3000 timing system overhaul at 100K

I've got a 2014 Expedition w/ 125,000 on it. Changed the plugs at 90k and oil religiously. No problems so far.

They are extremely intolerant of extended oil change intervals. Like a lot of modern engines, you can’t delay those fluid changes.

If that was in the 2007 F150, I still drive it. 150k miles and going strong.

I had an 07 5.4L triton v8 f150. It had 240k~ miles on it when I sold it. That being said it had a violent shake when you would speed up when it was around 2nd and 3rd gear that no-one could ever fix, sometimes if you didn't let up on the gas a certain amount when it started the shaking routine then the transmission light would come on and it wouldn't let you accelerate for a few seconds and then the engine would come back. I got used to it and still find myself applying pressure to the pedal in the way that minimized the shaking in the old truck lol. I now have one with the 5.0 and its insanely better than that old triton pos. I'm no expert but I am inclined to agree with this mechanic.

Had a buddy put almost 200k miles on one. Never had a plug break off. His experience is not the norm

My 07 F150 had this once and surprisingly, it was the freaking spark plugs that caused it. I explained the issue to a Ford mechanic (family friend) over the phone and he diagnosed it immediately. Crazy.

Yeh I had two buddies with the same model and year and they both had that problem. I had spark plugs and other stuff replaced but after I sold it I was talking to one about it and he mentioned something about coil packs or something being replaced that fixed his. idk, it never really "died" on me and left me stranded but there were a few times I was praying going up big elevated interstate change ramps that I would make it. I finally learned that you gotta hit that sweet spot and get about 10/15 mph over the speed limit and coast up the hills that gave it trouble lol.

No question the 5.0L is a much better motor. IMO the 2019 F-150 with the 5.0 was probably the best Ford pickup ever made.

By contrast, the 5.4L is absolute shite. Likely the worst engine in any pickup in 20 years with the possible exception of the 6.0/6.4L power strokes of that era.
